Remember that for an SLR, the camera body is the cheap part...

Thats right! And note that most of those listed include an el cheapo lens in the kit price, so be prepared to spend more for some good glass, unless you have compatible lenses from you film SLR.

...coming from a guy with a "cheap" $4000 camera body. ;-) He's right though.

Don't forget the Original first ever DSLR below the $1000 mark, the Rebel 300D, still available new from major retailers like B & H.

Well there is always the graying Sigma SD9 and SD10. Great cameras if you don't require low-light performance and accurate skintones, as in landscapes. Personally, if I had to do all over again, I would have never sold all my Nikon lenses to buy the Sigma like I did a few years ago. I would bought the D100 which was available at the time.

My lenses were MF, but they would have still been usuable on the D100. It just never dawned on me at the time that I could do that.

So if you have any investment in lenses at all, stick with that camera maker. The differences between the cameras are so small its not worth worrying about.

If you include the current rebate going on, the Konica-Minolta Maxxum 7d is also under the $1000 price point.

My local CompUSA is selling the 10D also at slightly under $1000 clearance pricing. Brand new.

I think they are clearing out all the stuff they found in the warehouse. As they have merged with another store and closing all of the purchased stores.

The D70 is still being sold and discounted. But you did say "current production" so I guess the D70s covers it.

On ebay you can get some very nice canon 10D's, D60s and D30s at nice rates. Although since you have the rebel and D70 on that list, i'm not sure these would be considered "entry level" :)

Either way, my research has dug up that (in the UK) 10D's go for almost exactly £400, as do D60's, and D30's go for almost exactly £300. Do your own currency conversion for mickey-mouse currencies like the dollar.

Edit: Aiee, didn't notice the "current production" bit... ignore this post then if you're not interested in the second hand market
