Good lightsaber work...

Fun, but one problem.... "it lacks Jawa"

(you must always have a Jawa scurrying by in the background just for future note)

;)

Woah!

Joey, how did you do the lightsabers?! That was... amazing.

Thanks for sharing Joey! Not bad!, Not bad at all. Some really great work with the light sabre effect and the sound effects. Good choices of music for the most part.

A couple thoughts on how you could tighten this up:

1. Try shortening your clips a bit more. Switch to another camera angle more often for example. One thing I did was I started timing scenes in movies, on tv, and in commercials. It'll really help you think through how often you need to switch camera angles, etc. If you're like me and have one camera then you'll find yourself shooting scenes 2-4 times through to get all the angles you'll want once you get to the editing room. My generic range for a clip is probably 15-60 frames. Shorter for "music video" style projects, longer for ads.

2. The overall video is too long -- it loses some of its appeal simply by its length. Look for ways to tighten it up by cutting unecessary elements and shortening some of the clips.

3. It loses a lot as soon as you get to the stairwell. It feels to me like once you got to that point you just kind of decided you were tired of editing and it was time to just get the thing done. Consider cutting the entire part after he hits you in the nose until the teacher shows up. I think you'll find it stronger that way.

Overall you have a very strong start and did some excellent work. The choreographing of the sabre scenes is particularly well done. Keep it up!

I've only been doing video for a year (got my first camera and editing software last September) so I'm no expert, but I love, LOVE, putting projects together.

Here's the only one I have on the web right now. I had to use a lot of stills that a buddy of mine took because two of my dv tapes were MIA while I was editing. I only had 5 days to put this together before we had to show it, heh.

Great video!
So what software did you use? Does anyone know of any free software this can be done with?

iMovie comes free with OS X and is what I use for now. I've got final cut pro but need some time to play with it and most of my videos have tight deadlines.

I tried using Windows Movie Maker once and hated it.

Holy cow Joey, that was absolutely HILARIOUS! Two thumbs WAAAAYYYY UP!!!! Tons of frame by frame editing, must've been very tedious!

Oh, and sorry about that whole "meet me out by the flag pole" thing in that other thread. I see now your shwartz is as big as mine!

I have the flu right now and even thinking about doing the frame by frame for the lightsabers made me want to either vomit or go back to sleep. quite a lot of work, I'd guess you spent way more than 40 hours on this altogether. you look much younger in this one than you do in most of your photos; how old is it? nice work

anyway...back to being sick...thanks for the break.

Well done Joey!

You had this old lady and her 10 year old daughter cracking up. Even my 3 year old giggled at the fart part and said, "SHAGGY!"

Wow, I wish I could do that. I have to admit, I've kinda had this techno phase lately, what's the name of that song?

P.S. Thanks for reminding me about those community service hours, I need to get on that!

There are clearly a few points in that chess match where one king could've taken the other :(

Pretty funny towards the end :)

Hey, thanks for the great critique.
Your video is great too, cuts a little fast for my preference, but mine are too slow for your preference. :-D Let's be pals.

To put it simply, I exported the footage as a .flm, this is a file that allows you open the video in photoshop as a series of frames. Basically, I spent hours drawing a rounded white stick on a duplicate layer over the wooden pole and then duplicated that layer, applied a gaussian blur for the glow, and colored it accordingly. The other things are either stock effects or done in premiere.

Adobe Premiere Pro for the editing, and photoshop for the effects.
You can get these free if you're not afraid to be charged. ;-)
Try www.downloads.com for free programs, actually.

I spent a total of 5 hours shooting the chess club, 4 hours shooting that light saber fight scene, and 23 hours editing the sucker. Glad I got to sweat off my community hours that way instead of picking up garbage at lunch. For the remaining hours, I did a painting in the school.

The movie was shot at the end of the school year (June) and was edited over the summer on a old beater computer I borrowed from the school. I think I look older in my photos because I'm not acting like a complete moron like in the movie. :-D

Heh thanks and glad to give a little critique one videophile to another. Dude seriously that's a ton of editing in photoshop! There's an iMovie plugin that does a decent lightsabre effect, maybe there's one for Premier. :)
