Tim, the assignment to date was done manually by Mr Setzler...

Yeah but I thought Mr. Setzler and Dpchallenge were the same thing : ) No, really, I understand what you are saying but are we still going to have an amount of photos randomly assigned to us like before or are we going to have to go and request them? However we do it it's all good. I'm enjoying the critiques more and more.

I am in as well .. the 'beak week' for work/vacations/life issue is a good idea I think. Somehow I would like the idea of the pool .. it was not easy to look back in the forum for the photo assigne to me ...
And I think we should continue with it wth some automatic process ... to assign photos to comment ...
I did not submit in the last 2 weeks so I fdid not get mu commented in details but I still think the idea is good with what we have done ...
We just need to move to reduce John's work ... I guess he has not done any chess pictures in the last 2 weeks ;-) :-)

Maybe this it too simple but why dont we do it like this:

Based on everybody doing 5 critiues a week:
1) Divide the number of entries into a pecentage and then create groups of the top 20%, 21-40%, 41-60%,61-80% and 81-100%. These percentages could be posted on the forum showing which placement numbers fall into each group.

2) Each critiquer must select one picture from each group and do a critique, if it has already been done, just move on and find another in that group. As they go through they could also add any extra comments on those that have already been done.

Of course, people are likely to critique the pictures they like, but we all have different tastes and also some people will critique the pictures that are perhaps the hardest to do, cause at the same time we learn through the process. Maybe this is too simple and of course relys on trust, but we all volunteered to do this and I think that we will all keep our end of the bargain up! OK, now critique this one:-)

I'm reading all this stuff, by the way :) I'm thinking and absorbing all of it...

I think we should be randomly assigned photos --it is amazing how much you can get out of a photo you originally did not like--you are forced to re-look at hte image and you get a new understanding of even the most unpromising photo.

boy is that the truth. i originally left a comment on a photo that i should have been a little nicer on. then it turned out to be one of my critique photos. after really looking at the photo, i saw a lot of potential in it and told the person so. i learned a lot about glancing at a photo verses really looking at it.

Interesting. I have often been curious as to the average time a picture is viewed before being voted on. With a dial-up connection and so many pics to vote on, sometimes I rush, and then feel I am missing so much. And how fair am I being to the person who perhaps put great effort into detail that I did not see at first? Someone said this week that they do not vote on a pic until they have viewed it at least twice. That caught my attention and made me feel guilty. I believe that comment will help me change my ways for the better.

I usually vote once at reasonable speed just using 4-7. Then I go through the whole lot again adjusting through to use full scale 1-10. (Don't often go below 3 in practice but I have done it for a number of images). Then go through again a couple of times fine tuning the scores.

I sometimes comment a few as I go through, sometimes I add more after finishing voting.

This is why I don't want to sign on for more than 4 critiques a week - I take a LOT of time in voting.

You and I vote pretty much the same. I usually place them in three bins 4-5-6 to start with, with the occasional outstanding one hitting a 7 or 8.
Then I go through each bin, with 6's going from 5-10, 5's from 4-higher, 4's from 3 to higher. I've occasionally raised a 4 to a 9. But this is on a more detailed look. I always try to look at everyone 3 times in full photo view. Then I will comment. So just the voting takes quite a few hours, generally spread out over 2-3 evenings. I'm on a high speed modem connection which makes it possible to do this.

Sometimes I'd like to skip the voting and spend more time on CC type critiques, but I know I would never do them all. I'd be game to do that, as I think I am learning more from the CC than I am from voting. But I guess that most folks here want to get a score.
