R.

I used a little noise reduction to get rid of noise from shooting at 200 ISO, but I was very careful to back off the opacity on that layer until the texture remained but the sensor noise was reduced. I started getting hammered by Neat image comments, so I went back through my workflow without noise reduction.. and once reduced to web size images the difference is not even visable. The combination of lighting, my subjects amazingly good skin tone, and using curves to adjust contrast just left smooth skin.... I think mildly disgruntled is a good work for what I am feeling at the moment as well.

People with little knowledge will suddenly start pretending they have it after reading a post, then deal out their ignorance in spades. Don't pay attention to it. It's a catch 22 here. If I hadn't softened my model's face who wears NO makeup except for lipstick 3 times a month, I'd be criticized for the facial flaws and told I should use Neat Image to soften it up a bit.

Forget it, I'm sure your pick is great. I'm writing this one off.

But as you know, that sword cuts both ways. It'odd how the extremes take hold and as always, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I'll still maintain that the timing of this thread was pretty lame.

Oh, and I dont think terje was being rude, he's just calling a spade as such.

I have 2 good examples of Neat Image over use, or abuse, or in some cases just right abuse...LOL

No neat Image and Neat Imaged.

Thank you for posting an example. I think that, more than arguments back and forth, show what people might be refering to.

And I prefer the one without. :)

Plastic skin without noise reduction, is this wrong??
1. Start with a subject that has amazing skin tone
2. Shoot outside just after the sun drops below the horizon so the entire sky acts like a giant softbox.
3. Shoot with a large pad of white road or white fabric in front of the subject to reflect even more diffuse light into his/her face.
4. Slightly overexpose without letting any details blow out. (ver possible becaue the light described above is very flat)
5. Use curves in photoshop. Select a light point and the darkest shadow area on the subject's face. Bump the light area up a bit and the shadow area down a bit to make a nice 'S' shape curve that will dramatically increase the contrast across the subject's face.
6. Get blasted in a challenge for using neat image.

I have done similar with B&W film and high contrast paper and it looks very nice. (I never did color darkroom work, so I have no idea if it could be done) Apply the same basic technique to a color photo using photoshop and the subject's skin takes on an almost surreal look.

Now I'm fine with people saying maybe I shouldn't do that because it doesn't look quite real, but don't say a destroyed the natural texture using neat image.... I destroyed in with traditional photographic techniques.

When would the timing have been good? There's always a challenge going on and there's always...the overuse of...well, you know what.

GeneralE already answered that question.

I'm sorry you feel that way. Read my original post carefully. It's one simple opinion. What this thread turned into is not my doing. What this site is and continues to be is *not my doing*.

I have every right in the world to dislike and wish that photographers would think before over-using a processing technique. That doesn't mean I don't like the technique itself, or don't use it myself, or hate everyone that uses it automatically (or hate anyone period, for that matter). It simply means I care about the images I'm seeing and want to bring it to public attention. I can't help that people are so personally charged by any dissenting opinions that they take them as personal attacks on their own works. I'm simply not going to apologize for it.

one of the photos in the nude III challenge (cant find the photo because i'm at work) but was way overdone with neatimage or something IMO..it was a pregnant woman reahing out with her hand and her whole body looked plastic. it was a nice photo but she looked like a doll, but they did pretty well in the challenge. i was surprised.

In all honesty I respect your opinion and agree that certain types of post processing may be over used or used inappropriately. Unfortunately, at the same time this thread was growing in popularity it appears that a number of challenge entries were getting hammered by comments about use of neat image and coupled with a rapid decline in the scores. I am not suggesting that there is, or isn't, a relationship between the thread and the voting, but this thread became a natural outlet for some artistic frustrations. I hope you see these comments simply as discussion on the topic at hand and not anger with your and/or your opinion.
