Corn Syrup + lots of red food coloring + a tad of hot chocolate powder or coffee to thicken and darken
Play around with that- that's what we always use for our movies. Soggy strawberries and tomatoes work well for guts too. :D

I always use a little blue food coloring to darken personally.

What I've always used in theatre is washing up liquid, red food colour, and drinking chocolate.

The reason the drinking chocolate is there is for colour and thickness. It also helps to darken it as it dries. The wash-up liquid is the right consistency, and has the added bonus of making the 'stain' easier to wash out afterward.

Hope this helps

Must be a scotland thing. It's got chunks of veg in it (carrot and potato etc), in a grey/brown sauce, along with oats and stuff to make it filling. If you ask me it tastes foul, but some people obviously eat it. Works better than just mushroom cos of the diff. colours and sometimes quite large veg chunks.

Edit:typo

Tastes foul and looks like puke. Gotta teach my mom that one.

Has to have carrots and peas. Puke always has carrots and peas!

Thanks a lot for the ideas!
Edited to say: This is why I love DPC

Milk with red food coloring will give the right texture but only good for perfectly flat positions. Has a very thick almost solid appearance.

Hershey's chocolate syrup for B&W photos.

Do a forum search in deviantart.com, there is truly a wealth of knowledge on the topic. If i remember correctly i recall reading about corn syrup and red food coloring. Maybe adding floor for thicker consistency.

In the business that I represent, and am burnt out with, the standard recipe is as follows...

1 bottle of clear Karo

red food color
yellow food color
green food color

you take the whole bottle of Karo, pour into a vat, bowl, whatever, include the red food color until the Karo is pure red. Add, about a 1/8th teaspoon of yellow to tone out the red. Add more yellow if desired. Add 1/4 teaspoon of green food color to tone down the red. Add drops of green until you get the desired look you are looking for.

This is what is used by many motion picture makeup artists, and what I use on a general basis when doing my "Madman" series.

Good luck.

I found this by mistake today here on DPC.

It's a makeups class image. Seems like a person to ask about it.

I go to Party City every Halloween and stock up on fake blood it seems to work well for me, or rather at least what I like to do, not neccessarily with a good score though. :) The stuff I buy is called "Bottle of Blood."

But it of course doesn't look as good as real blood.

Mark,
When you return to Uni after your long holiday. Remind me to make you some 'Scotch Broth'. Then you will find out that it is not "Foul" as you put it, but rather tasty. And MUCH better than any of your 'English' food
:)
