Just a thought here....
When you are writing your critiques and comments on a photo, when you see something that looks different, or would ordinarily be seen as a negative aspect of the image, take a close look to make sure that what you see is actually negative before you comment on it that way. I have seen some recent comments where I believe the commenter completely missed the photographer's intent... (no names and no examples)
When you are evaluating a photo, take a look and see if you can determine any special reason why something is the way it is before you say it is 'bad' or 'wrong' :)

I agree. All but maybe 2 people completely missed my point of my flags photo.
Newspapers in my area are grey. Photos in my newspapers are printed on GREY, therefor, the "white" areas show up grey, and the dark areas show up darker. I actually replicated our front page photo that week, and it was it's twin brother. I was, and still am quite proud of my imitation, including the exposure and 'darkness'.
HOWEVER, just cause I did it on purpose, doesn't mean people have to like it. That's why opinions were invented.
You know what they say...
Opinions are like buttholes, everyone's got one, and no 2 smell the same!

I agree in principle. However, there are times when it is difficult to truly figure out the photographer's intent. We could be helped if the photographer knows something is different as seen by most people, and then she/he adds a note to that effect in the comments box.
Now, I also think that even though we miss the intent, comments like "bad" or wrong" are not appropriate here. I try to use phrases like "I prefer it another way"; eg, "I prefer a smaller DOF for this shot", or "I think color would have worked better".

Wise not to name names, but if you see me do something like that, please thump me with an email so I'll know I did it :)
PS ~ That's not just to John... Anyone sees me screw up, PLEASE let me know... I won't take offense :)

John: harumph. :)
I would just like to mention here that I tend to put very little value in photo titles. There were lots of discussions a few months ago about how people were trying to "save" photos by giving them a title that relates to the challenge. Granted, that's not really the case in a Free Study challenge... But in general titles hold relatively little value for me and I admit that's probably been to my detriment in a few cases.
I'm also the first to admit that I don't always see what I'm "supposed to" in photos. Photography, though it is the practice of capturing real images, is a very subjective art form. If there's a hidden meaning or intent in your image, kudos for the multi-layered thinking. Not everyone will see it all of the time, unfortunately. 'specially me. =)
Rob :)
