I have been trying to recreate this technique of treating glass with rain x and taking a photo of the water droplets with the reflections of the images beneath the glass. My problem is that I have macro turned on and have placed the camera at varying distances from the glass plate...however I can't seem to get a good closeup because my camera won't focus on the droplets and the backdrop...i have fooled around with the apperture settings hoping that that would solve the problem and it almost did, but i still can't get as close as i would like. does anyone have any suggestions?

you've probably already tried this, but, did you try manually focusing? and did you read john's tutorial in the learn section?

yes that's actually where the idea to try came from

does your camera have manual focus? If so definitely use it.
Don't try to focus on the background, only the drops.
The trick is not only to get the right distance from the drops(with my camera on macro i have to be about 8 inches away) but you need to be a certain distance up from the background, depending on the background.
Lighting is also tricky, you have to be careful what reflects in the drops. Here are some of mine

I used autofocus...

arch, you don't need to focus on both... just on the water drops.. you need to isolate the water drops from the background with some blur created by depth of field...

John, does the camera need to be directly overhead with the lens level or can you aim from the side... I've had problems getting my tripod to hang the camera straight down and so some drops are further away then other drops... Was this a problem or do you just F stop a deeper DOF to cover them?

Thanks.

I hand held the 'liberty and justice' shot and the lens surface does need to be parallel to the glass if at all possible...

Shoot it at several stops between F4 and F7 and see what you come up with...
