I've decided it's my ambition to be like Joey Lawrence when I grow up, and to that end I took a stab at making poor Rosie Jack grungy, from this:

to this:

Hopefully Joey will come along and bless my efforts, jejejeĆ¢„Ā¢ Rosie Jack and her mother, fortunately, have gone back inland and aren't around to see this terrible thing I've done to her.

I think that the first issue is that Joey starts with subjects that we expect to be grungi-fied. Not sure that babies fall into this category.

Yours seems to have more texture (as in cardboard, bumps, rough rock) than those of is I have looked at. His seems to be dirtier with the texture coming from blobs and blotches of colour.

And that all makes sense ... ?

Cheers
Tony

I agree with tonyv. Not the best subject. Original looks much better.

Me too...

Your texture has more of a regular bump-map than a 'dirty' feel.

I've been playing with this as well, and can't really 'get' what Joey and others do, but I'm close with my lawnmower shot in the 'show us your mower' thread I started (Or at least I think I am...).

In that shot I used a random 'Plasma cloud' for the texture, cranked up the contrast, desaturated it and set it's layer mode to 'Darken'. (In Gimp, btw, similar process in PS).

Also the left side of his face has become to bright, and really detracts from the grunge. My eyes are sucked into his right ear, and don't really get back. :-).

Oh, and for the obvious, there is something very wrong with grunging a baby!

(Now off to have a go myself...)

How about this one? :) This is fun!

Go folks, go! Poor, grungy Rosie Jack! Do your worst (or your best?)

I quite agree that a baby's not the standard choice for grunging; that's why I did her, of course. And I agree this isn't a very good grunge attempt, but hey, it was late and it was my first try. I'll get better, I promise. I wanna be just like Joey, I do.

C'mon people, grunge her up for me! Best grunge shot will receive a free print from me, from my very own printer.

BIG PRIZE! Grunge that baby!

speaking of joey, where is he at? I haven't heard from him in a couple of days.

hey, just a random idea. what would it look like if you croped everything out of the grunged image but the babies eyes and nose and mouth...just tighten the crop up.

sorry, just a thought

Well, it would lose the powerful sense of depth, and it would lose the comntext of mother & child, but other than that....

"How to turn a baby into a monster?" by the DPC gang. Out next winter.

Looks pretty good Rob, but yeah the mother looks a bit too happy for grunge. :o)

Put the kid in an abandoned house and give him some matches or something, that would make a nice grunge picture. :-p

(*thinks about saying jejeje, but then wants to avoid a lawsuit)

He's dead, I ate him.

Here's my grunge, poor kid.

Mum and baby both look way too happy (and I'm not even sure what grunge is).

Poor little baby!

ROTFL.

GO people, GO! Someone beat Joey at his game, ok?

I'll close this contest Saturday at Midnight. The winner can choose a print from my portfolio and I'll print & mail it. I'm not sure how I'll determine the winner. Might just be my call, or I might empanel a jury.

What are the general things/steps/filters you guys are using to get this effect?
09/05/2005 03:06:16 PM · #18

Mostly used film grain filter (ps7)

This is my favorite so far I think. It really works well and looks 'realistic' enough to look like it was meant to be that way. Good way to get the girl out of the pic and add some neat neg. space.

I went a little overboard as usual.
