"...especially since I live in Texas."

What the hell has that got to do with anything?

If you had the time to take her picture you had the time to put her in a plastic cup and take her and her babies outside. Lacking that you should have had the taste not to post that image of her after you mutilated her.

"...you would die..."

So I guess now you are going to kill us because you are from Texas and we disagree with your way of thinking.

I'm on your side there, Pat. My brother moved into a house and has been terrorized by spiders for 2 years. They first bit his wife and she ended up with a huge hole in her leg, tremendous pain and discomfort and permanent scarring. Then both children - scarred badly. Then my brother. They bombed the house repeatedly and I think they finally got it under control.

But if they really cared about those wonderful creatures, they would've just given the house over to the cute little critters. Geez!

I would urge you to get the addresses of these caring folks and next time you find an unwelcome insect or rodent in your house, scoop it up and put it in a container with air holes and put some sort of food in there and ship it to one of those nice folks. I am sure they will all PM you with their addresses and will jump at the chance to provide a loving home to these cute little guys.

Hey, I'll fog my house. And if I wake up in the night with one crawling on me I'll squish it. But I'm not going to do a macro series on one and then crush it. Thats wrong.

My legs start to itch every time I look at those pictures.

When I was in high school we were having a party out my this small canal and my buddy found a rotted log that was really light. Wanting to act all tough he picked it up and shoulder pressed it. Well, while it was above his head the sucker cracked in half and hundreds... maybe thousands of little spiders fell from the log right onto his head and shoulders. He started screaming like a little girl and jumped into the canal. It still gives me the heebee geebees to think about it, but it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my life.

I'm from Texas...and I won't kill anyone for disagreeing with my way of thinking. However, I will kill any spider that is near me or my kids.

Now Mice, thats another story, I get the willies just thinking about them! (If I whacked one of them and babies started running all over I'd need CPR, actually I nearly require CPR just at the sight of a mouse in the vicinity of me)

Aw, com'on, they're soooo cute!

OMG, that is not cute. Unless of course its going down the throat of a snake or something, lol. Ewwwww, gives me the willies. You know I've scored mouse photos high on here based on if they give me the willies or not. I figure if its real enough to weird me out, then its a good photo :)

Oddly enough, I can see them in a pet store and even allowed my son to have them as pets before, but it's situational. I can't handle one running wild in my house(and yes its happened on more than one occasion, we live near big fields and I think that increases the odds) and if there are too many in a cage at a pet store just running all over it bugs me. A local pet store often has these big white rats that are all spastic and running all over like a big rat blanket. ackkkkkkkkkk, oh gawddddd I hate that.

Just last week, I came home and my cats had a dead one on the livingroom floor, I tried to cover it up and the cats would keep knocking the basket I had on it, off. Then they would pick it up and fling it in the air, etc. and relocate it, it was totally freaking me out. I called my husband at work and left a message sharing my horror, lol. He emailed me a note that said "I'll be home at 3:00 to get you down from the kitchen table". He and my kids know how much I hate them. One of our five year olds swept it up and took it outside for me when they got home from school, lol. (I don't like to get close enough to the dead ones to sweep them up even)

Just wanted to let you know that you made my afternoon - I was laughing out loud in my office/studio. Whether or not I agree with the decision to kill vermin/bugs aside, I thoroughly enjoyed your story! LOL

Yes, my mom was like that too. We were always getting on to her when she freaked out about a spider or a snake. Me, I was always picking them up to look at them.

Thanks Jimmy, I can laugh about it now too, but thats only because there haven't been anymore mice sightings, lol. Fortunately or unfortunately my life is full of entertaining stories like that! Glad I could entertain you :)

On a side note, might I say WOW, whats with the name calling because you disagree with someones like or dislike of spiders, etc. I know it was "graphic" but still, danggggg.

Also, Toddhead, i'm not even afraid of spiders and your story gave me chills, lol. Too bad you didn't have your camera with you then :)

Brave words Jon - considering all the 'big' spiders we get in the UK!!

If that thing was in my house I would try and tackle it (how big is that thing?!) and deposit it at the top of my Garden. I dont like killing anything that moves, slugs, snails, ants heck anything.

Having said that if I could not move it then I would 'put it down' 'cos my wife would leave me if I left it in the house!!

I live in MT and I can tell you I've never seen a spider this big just walking around. This thing just give me the creeps...and I don't mind spiders. I think the real creep factor is the fact that this is a mobile army that could attack at any moment! Yeeeesh!

You can't hardly get a Wolf spider to bite. I was photographing one in its natural habitat last year and I used my fingers to guide it where I needed it to be to get a good shot. Totally non-agressive.

I'd be more troubled because of the little ones, and by little I don't mean the "babies" of the shots!
REad the other spider thread to see what I mean!

Guesswhich one is a "killer" type?

I don't mind spiders, snakes or mice, but worms, ewwwwwww. I don't kill anything though (I know I wouldn't want to be smushed, so I don't smush anything). I just coax stuff outside or tell my husband "you gotta come home right now, a worm got into the house. That only happened one time a long time ago.

Another time, one of my daughter's rooms started smelling what I can only describe as pungent. I couldn't find what was causing it for a long, long time. Then one day, I happened to look under the dust ruffle of her bed and saw a cottony tail and Thumper-like feet. I totally freaked. The damn cat (may he RIP) had brought the rabbit inside and hid it under the bed. Another phone call to the spouse at work ...

The one pictured by the OP is a Lycosa rabida. The male of that species grows up to 1/2 inch and the female to 7/8 inch.

The Lycosa aspersa pictured below grow to about an inch.

This shot was taken with a 1Ds and an EF 180mm 3.5 macro. After the shoot I left the spider to live out the rest of his (her) life on its on accord.

Thanks for that - for one moment I thought these suckers were the size of dinner plates!!

Hmmm.
Mosquito bite = Itchy two days.
Spider Bite = Rotting flesh and incredible pain for a month.
KILL THE BIG UGLY MONSTERS!

Hmmm. Let me think about this.

Mosquitos = itchy bite 2 - 3 days. possibility of West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Yellow Fever, malaria, or other mostquito borne nasty illness. also, in my case, allergic reaction causing large swellings and post-bite pain.

Spiders = not as likely to bite as mosquitos. don't carry diseases. poisonous varieties less likely to be encountered. identification (and therefore bite prevention) relatively easy. eats disease carrying mosquitos. in my area only two varieties of poisonous spider to worry about.

I'll take my chances with the spiders, thank you very much.

Identification of the poisonous varieties in your area is key. If you're concerned, take steps to eliminate them. Avoid places where they hang out (for example, around here (S.C.), black widows like crawl spaces under houses). Regular house cleaning and maintenance helps reduce the prevalence of all insects and spiders, poisonous and otherwise. Reducing potential habitats (stacks of firewood, bricks, garage and closet clutter, etc.) around your house helps cut down on the indoor population. Learn to identify spiders and their habitats, take steps to avoid attracting them, and you will be much less likely to be bitten.

And as G.I. Joe always said,
"Knowing is half the battle!"

One time my friend had a spot on his skin and he called me to search the net for symptoms of spider bites. I was shocked when i pulled up some of the images from the spider bites. There are a few very common types of spiders in my area that if you get bit it can rot away your skin, and muscle. Im talking HUGE 6-12" holes that looked like acid had ate away the skin. I use to just push away spiders till i seen the images of some of the common spider bites and it made me think twice.

They creep around then drop in from the ceiling. The crawl around on your bed and stuff then bite you at night when your dead asleep. Not me, no more.

On that note, my spiderbite last summer had me looking like Quasimodo for a month. Stupid me put on a shirt that I had left hanging on the porch rail for a few hours while gardening. I don't like them, but I dont post pictures of raw carnage either. Uck. Gag.

edit for linky fix
