Canon or Nikon? Which one is the best camera manufacturing company. Your answer? And why?

For me the choice was Nikon, many years ago. It was a dream come true to own a Nikon slr with Nikkor lenses.

My advice is simple. Find photographs that you like - (books, magazines, dpc portfolio's) - learn what equipment was used to take them, then make a tally list of each manufacturer. [out of 100 photos that appeal to you, "x" number will be from canon/nikon/minolta/pentax/kodak/etc. w/ a, b, and c lenses] Go to a camera store and handle each of the top 3 choices from your tally list for ergonomic feel. Then evaluate price points versus your budget and decide upon your compromises.

Easy.

Anyhoo -- Every good photographer knows Nikon is the best. First, chicks dig Nikon. Second, their flash system is superior. Third, (at least the d70) uses a true CCD sensor -- not some budget-built CMOS (they will in the future, no doubt about it though). Fourth, their build-construction and ergonomics are MUCH MORE user friendly than the Canon counterparts -- just go pick one up and you'll see for yourself. Fifth, Nikon makes the best glass -- need proof? Here's a guy that mounts Nikon glass on his Canon 20d...

I rest my case ;)

Hehehe, I don't like CMOS sensors either but then again I don't like Nikon either. For me the best in color and dynamic range is the Olympus E-1 and it is built from the ground up to be digital.

Yeah, I'm sure there's absolutely noooo reason Nikon moved to CMOS for their D2X.

that link just says who PWNS
canon is by far the best, their cameras are way better thought out as far as where buttons are located. take a look at any nikon slr camera the button system is just not logical, and those screen protectors make the camera look cheap and poorly made
My Point
and look at how much cleaner canon cameras lok compared to the nikons
take a look

FWIW, every Getty Images staff photographer shoots Canon gear.

I actually had this debate with a salesman a Ritz the other day. He was slamming the Canon and saying how much more solid the Nikon body was. It was an entertaining discussion to say the least.

I honestly believe that Nikon was king was I started photography. The Nikon F3HP and Nikkor AIS lens were absolutely amazing. In fact, I still still see that as the peak of deliverying serious gear directed purely at photographers. For me the Nikon legend ended when they started selling Nikor lens without aperture rings.

When it came time for a digital SLR, I compared the images from the 10D and the D100 and decided I had to go with Canon for image quality and because the camera worked better in my hands.

At this point I would say that neither system has a clear advantage. Shoot with both at your local camera store and buy the one that feels natural to you. Your ability to interact with a camera with out thought is of more value than all the bells and whistles that the salesman will toss at you.

That's why I went the 20D route; the controls feel ridiculously more natural to me. That plus all the posts about the "green light of death" scared me... And, finally, the 10-22 f/2.8, a simply incredibly distortion-free super WA.

well, I can tell you what Fotikina gave as numbers.... and it's not pretty...this is all numbers gathered from the distributors.

Camera bodies
Consumer dSLR: Canon over Nikon 13/1
Pro-sports: Nikon over Canon 2/1
Studio: Canon over Nikon 30/1

I think these came out in april.. the proshop where I buy actualy sells both lines and posts worldwide stats.... it makes the "canon or nikon" discussions shorter!

Nikon over Canon for pro sports? That doesn't sound right, given all the pictures we've seen of the L line at events. Maybe it's just that the Canon guys stand together (somehow I doubt it)?

Ahh, the never ending Nikon/Canon wars!!! You have to love it. My two cents is that the above reflects the main reason a new buyer (no lenses) should choose which camera body. Go try them and see what feels better. Not what others say. People tend to want to validate their decisions by promoting others to do the same. Human nature but not always good acvice. Both companies have great lenses if you go out and spend the money.

Oh, and don't be fooled by all those picutes canon users like to throw around of event shooters and conon cameras. They do not tell the whole story. Hell, Nikon even makes white lenses in all their telephotos now.

You'd probably look pretty white trash with a Nikon if you ask me- but now, with a CANON you are charming and classy. ;)
This should be a lesson to all of you guys out there.

Whatever you do buy, make sure you don't go to a store that's on comission. They'll push whatever they will make the most comission on. However, since a lot of places are comission, make sure you do your research and homework, and don't feel compelled to buy right then and there. Go home and sleep on it.

Oh yes, and I stayed with Canon because I was so happy with the quality of my P&S (Canon A70). Yes I know P&S should not be ocmpared to dSLR's. I had the chance to fiddle with a Canon 10d and a Nikon D70, and I found the Canon more ergonamical in my hands. JMHO

Those pictures are staged. Canon pays some of the big name sports photogs to pose as a group. And they do it in the morning before the games are started so they can set it up with nothing but big L glass on the latest Canon bodies. And most of those guys don't buy their equipment themselves anyway. If you shoot sports, and get down on the sidelines, you'll see more Nikons than Canons. In the bleachers everybody thinks that all the white lenses are Canon but some are Nikon too.

Chicks dig photographers that take good pictures of them, Canon or Nikon, end of story.

Yeah but it has been one of Canon's better marketing ploys to date. I have sen those pics so many times I lost count. And the Canon legions (except you of course) keep pushing them as gospel. Isn't marketing wonderful?
