Wanted to drop in and add my kudos to Joey. I've been a admirer of his special style since he submitted this masterpiece:

!

Edit: Oops, hit submit too soon. I was going to add:

GREAT WORK Joey, keep it up, and be true to your gut feelings for photos, they work!

And MANY MANY KUDOS to GraphicFunk (Daniel) for that really extraordinary kindness he showed to Joey (and for his givingness to the site in general).

Ditto here with all that's good about the amazingly talented Joey. And kudos to your parents for raising and nurturing such a creatively imaginative gentleman. Much success.

This has turned into the unexpected. Please let me explain what took place. Joey is indeed a very special talent. We all agree: he is an artist. When I was 14 out of the clear air I was given a developing kit by some Sisters of charity. From here I built a pin hole camera out of cardboard and this changed the entire direction of my life. I am an avid reader.

Well, I decided to post a thread to pay tribute to this special talent. After I did so, I got the immediate impulse to offer the Minolta Dimage 7hi to Joey.

However, I never thought that he was going to accept it publicly. This has caused a minor embarrassment because I never wanted this thread to be about me. I did contact BradP and told him that I had offered the camera to Joey and will BradP please stand by in case Joey would refuse to help me persuade him to accept. This took place because I asked Joey to explain his current camera to me and then I shot him back an email making the offer. I believed he went off line and so I did not get an immediate reply. Just to secure the offer I contacted Brad and told him that if I don't hear from Joey by tomorrow will brad please assist in beating up Joey to accept.

So again, I do not want to shoehorn myself into this thread. His appreciation is already apparant.

I thank you all for my PMs have multiplied but I assure you that this is and was not my intention. I have been more than lucky in the field of photography and I have made more money than I deserve. Yet, my love for the field continues because I am unable to retire.

I like photographers and this is why I am in DPC. There is something special about this field and I still enjoy watching ideas as presented in images. I do enjoy all of your company because like me, you are seeking a lovely image.

The thread may be about Joey's amazing talent, but you're a class act, Dan, and the limelight is big enough for both. What a great gesture!

That's a really cool thing to do! Not that he needed a better camera but I'm glad he'll have some bigger files to save.

Joey, what kind of editing software are you using? Do you have a good copy of Photoshop?
07/20/2005 12:11:15 AM · #66
Whether either of you wanted the attention or not is beside the point - you both deserve it. Who knows Dan - you may be planting the seed for a future professional photographer (though he claims cinemographer as of now).

I thanked Dan in this thread because without his contribution to DPC, it would certainly be less of a place. Ever see how many times that guy writes great comments? Man... :-)

SUPPORT THE ARTS IN SCHOOL!!!

I work in a school and see wonderful talent like Joey only once in a while. We should support more right-brain focused activities in our schools which will help young people like Joey and many others on this site develop their creativity to it's potential. Dan is truly a gentle soul with karma who is "paying it forward".

Daniel and Joey,

I was really pleased to read about the camera donation this morning - put a smile on my face for the day :)

I used a Minolta 7i last year for a while and loved it, to the point that I had my heart set on getting an A2. Joey, I'm sure that you will really have fun with this great camera, the layout of the controls and the manual feel to the camera make it an absolute joy to work with! If you can, try to get a Minolta 2500 flash unit.

Oh, and welcome to the world of RAW :)

So, the first time I saw this thread on the home pgae list it was like "Tribute to Joey Lawrence" posted by "Joey Lawrence" - I laughed silently out loud. ;-)

In all seriousness - well, some seriousness anyway - I like both Joey and Daniel a lot for their contributions to the site. Stand up and take a bow, Joey. You are a gifted kid with a bright future. You, too, graphicfunk! You are gifted, albeit not a kid, but probably with a colorful past. ;-)
