We were up in Muskoka (Ontario cottage country) this weekend. We went to Cleveland's House for lunch, just because we fealt the need to spend $40 on a couple of burgers & fries at a posh resort. I like to heckle the Buffy's & Biffs as they pass by on the way to their boats. It's just good sport.

Anyhoo... C&C would be appreciated. Any preference of one composition over the other? Too grainy? Both just plain suck? Should I have simply jumped in & drowned myself?

I like the colors and angle in the second one, the first seems too snap shotish and not enough background. Could probably be better with a "Buffy" being accidently bumped into the water but that's more of the sport thing. ;)

Good job

I like the composition of the second one, myself.

im with the others... i really like the second one... how does it look in b/w ( for a tad more depth ?) , or even selective desat, like leave the chairs coloured...

I like the first one - except with less water. I think the straight line of chairs and the regular color pattern lwork well with the direct angle. I like the pathe that leads down and the kids add a spark of life. Just crop off a lot of that water, this scene does not need to be square. Somewhere there was a thread about making brown water bluer.

So much to say :o)

First off, "Shot by Slippy" should be your logo and also your copyright mark in bold letters on all of your prints! When I clicked the thread titled "Shot by Slippy" I expected to see a big, dead water buffalo draped across your lap.

Second, the following line from your post is the most lyrical phrase turned on dpc that I have run across since "Limericks":

And lastly, oh, yes, the photos... I'm leaving you comments on each. Like 'em!

I agree with Ellen. The pattern of the straight(er) line "stimulates" my eye more

I like the angle of the 2nd one better...but I like the view from the first one (too much water) where you can see 'more' of the garden.

I wonder how a panorama would have looked....

Chalk me up for #2.

But... did you see the kids playing in the top right corner of #1? I wonder what it would look like if you took your original and cropped down to just the top right quadrant? Include the chairs, maybe a little bit of water, the tree and stairs on the left ... and everything else on the top and right.

Edit: I see someone else made a similar comment on the image itself.

That's an interesting photo. What gets my attention is that it makes me think...

Most retaining walls at the parks I've been too are blocked off so people don't end up in the water. This one looks like it's just inviting everyone to get right up to the edge. Are we more paranoid in the US, or is that just an optical illusion? Is that water really shallow?

As far as the image goes. The different color chairs are cool. The park is pretty. The chairs are like a border separating park and water. It would be interesting to see some different perspectives and angles. I'm wondering what a shot looking down the line of chairs might be like. Or, a person in one chair?

I agree with colyla, more park, less water.

I really like the kids playing in the first one. Wish we could have gotten more of them instead of just the chairs.

The second seems to have a little more interest to me, good pictures.

Wow, great comments, thanks. I see I may have to revisit some of the other shots I took of this scene. I got a number of different angles & framings.

So I'm lyrical am I? :-D

i like the second one. very inviting and pleasing to the eye.

were the chairs not good enough for anyone to be sitting on? heh
07/18/2005 10:59:20 AM · #16
The first image is suffering from an interesting phenomenon: the waterline is horizontal, the trees are vertical, but the chairs are receding in size because you didn't shoot if at right angles to the line of chairs. Same principle as a building getting smaller at the top. This introduces a compositional glitch, as the angle of recession is too small to seem intentional. I'll see if I can cobble a PS fix for comparison.

The second is really rich for the BG especially. What wonderful greens. I have to vehemently disagree with suggestion of B/W or selective desat... Say what? This is all ABOUT color.

Overall, one feels the scene itself has immense, untapped potential. Kinda like you, slippy, in fact :-) I'd love to see the outtakes.

Something like this. Note that I've skewed the picture to stop the chairs from receding, and additionally I've gone into a much more dramatic pallette just for the hell of it. I think the skewing works regardless, the pallette is just me being outrageous, but I sort of like it.

i would have lined up the chairs to the bottom of the frame. 2nd one is nice though

Hey Slippy,

Something about your shot that I really like. I was fiddling with it in PS and came up with a different take on it. There are soooo many chairs that they dominate. What about a vertical crop?

I was practicing contrast masking on it, and discovered that the inverted version is pretty wild looking.

Here they are. What do you think about them?

Edit: Flipped images.

I actually like the inverted version however think it would be even better if the purple areas of the background were shown in B & W.

That's a good idea. Give it a shot and see what you come up with.
