As a practical suggestion, once you have your group defined, close this thread and start one in the Out and About section, as if this were a "virtual" GTG outside of DPC, and then keep everything else there. |

Sounds like a sensible way to do things... |

My 2Cents:
Some people are very "Good" at a particular style of photography or subject. Perhaps you could choose a topic or style of the month and choose your mentor accordingly. I would be willing to participate as well. You can't ever learn too much!
Great idea by the way. |

I would really love to be involved with this. I am new to DPC but I am involved in another photog site, //www.equinephotographers.org/.
Check out the site and look at our big contest results //www.equinephotocontest.com/winners2.asp
There are alot of cool images. I won the ammy artistic division! YEAH!! So while I am a good equine photographer, I need alot of help in other areas.
Thanks,
Melissa |

Top photographers at DPC have always been accessible for informal mentoring. But with the growth of DPC your suggestion to formalize the process is a good one whose time has come.

I'm really glad to see the level of interest this has generated. Something to think about now: We'll probably have enough people for 3-4 groups soon. Take a look at the profiles of the others who've responded and see who you think you're compatible with.
I'm going to run a few errands. When I come back, I'll get the list of interested people and see if I can logically group them together. Once I do this, I'll post my suggested arrangements and we can modify as members see fit.
Thanks for all the responses and interest, thus far!

In answer to the request for mentors....
I feel that all participants have something to contribute regardless of their level of skill or knowledge. If there's something specific someone wants help with I'm willing to jump in and help. I still have lots to learn as well.

count me in too, as a learner. I am not nearly good enough to be a mentor.

Without a doubt, you are correct. It may be that informal leader/mentor is best for a small group, or no leader at all - that can be left up to the individual groups. |

A suggestion, if I may, a general group of people wanting to help each other improve is too closely mirroring what DPC is -- it will be of interest to nearly everyone here since that interest is what brought them here to begin with. The group has the potential to gather all of DPC into it (well, at least the forum dwelling subgroup) making the group much larger than the stated target size. If the groups were made more focused, concentrating on specific areas of desired improvement or exploration, there would be a much greater chance for the groups to stay smaller and more managable. After all, a tighter knit group will have much stronger similar interests than just to 'learn photography'.
If this suggestion is accepted, the first step would be to poll for topics of interest and the second to find membership in the groups based around those areas of interest.

As a suggestion for those posting or have already posted indicate the areas that you would like help with. It will be easier to group people with that info in mind.
For me....
Design theory as it relates to photography -- i.e. composition, colour, texture etc.
Breaking the rules and making it work
The Basics - getting it right the first time
there are others but thats a start....

If youw ant to make a "focus group" on landscape/architecture/natural light photography, I'm available to chair/mentor it if anyone is interested. I think orienting the groups around certain "styles" or "topics of interest" is a great idea. I didn't respond before because I have little desire to mentor (for example) an aspiring portrait photographer. That's outside my main sphere of interest.

Since I'm so new to photography, I don't even have a focus yet.
For me, I'd like to focus on:
the basics (composition, technical aspects of photography: exposre compensation, metering, etc.)
I enjoy taking :
candids, indoor and out
Landscape and Scenic stuff (love to travel!)
Underwater (Diver with a casing for my PnS)
But I'd like to discover a niche or something I could 'specialize' in... |

Oh ... my intention was to be a mentor. I find that I learn the most effectively, when teaching others. So ... put my name down as a mentor and keep me informed.

Personally I would love to be in a group that focuses more on the post processing aspect using photoshop and such. So if anybody wants to be a lead I would GREATLY appreciate joining that kind of group.
I also am looking to learn a bit more about taking portraits and or candids.

Dangit! I was hoping you'd volunteer to mentor the "Portraits of dogs with no asses" group!
Oh well. I would definitely be interested in learning landscape/architecture/natural light photography, particularly landscape and skies, so count me in on that group. ...as long as there is no math.

No math. I'm ok for a Photoshopping mentor also if nobody more skilled than me wants to take it on, but we have people in here that do it better than I, though I'm no slouch.

Looks like this thing will be a go as soon as someone can get it all organized. Maybe make a list of topics corresponding with a mentor/mentors
and let "students" jump in where they want help.
I think, things like Portraits, Landscape/Architect, Wildlife, and technical subjects like Flash photography, Studio, Photoshop would all do well. Alas, I am still currently unemployed and just making ends meet, so I haven't paid dues and become an official member yet, but I will, and would like to be a student. I think this will help us to concentrate on the areas we are most interested in and not have to "google" so hard for an answer to a question sometimes. |
