Well, a little town near me decided to do their 4th of July (United States Independence Day) fireworks last night. So, I took the family over to watch and also took along my camera... over position wasn't the greatest, a McDonald's parking lot.
I took 70+ photos, I would appreciate any comments on these.
They were shot from with a Canon Rebel XT with a Sigma 18-200 zoom set (mostly) at 8 seconds & f22...

Wow, these are great photos. I especially like:
and
Not really sure why i like these particular ones but they were the photos that stood out for me. You've inspired me to take some firework photos now. Gonna have to wait a while for a fireworks display in the UK though ;)

Pretty impressive. Our town's fireworks are tomorrow night and I was going to give it a shot, but we'll be on a friend's boat and I can't imagine it will be steady enough to get anything good. Nice shots. |

aguapreta, what was the ISO?
How did you avoid streaking from an 8 second exposure?
Were you mostly at 18mm or tighter?
where do storks come from?

I set the ISO at 400.
I am not sure what you mean by streaking... I had my clothes on.
I varied the zoom through out the range, going to a maximum of about 100mm.
My mom never told me where storks come from.

I'm a bit worried about what it says in the Digicamhelp article - it says to place your digital camera where the fireworks will explode. It doesn't explain the logistics of doing that, nor how to retrieve the camera safely once it has come back down to earth. ;-)

Great shots! (I like the one with the golden arches... j/k)
My favorite is the 5th one (smallest of the bunch). You've inspired me to give it a shot as well on Monday night. :-)
Thanks for sharing!

Good shots guys. For myself, I prefer to include some landscape into my foreworks shots to give them a bit more context. Like this:

hmm, rather serendipitous that a current challenge is "Circles" and it overlaps with the 4th of July, and even with the 1st of July, for Canadians. I wonder how many fireworks shots we'll see, I know I got one good one.

Those are all great shots. My first attempt at fireworks didn't go quite as well. I got 1 shot out of 100 that I would publish.
It's a good thing I can try any night I want at this location. :) |

I'm not nearly as good, but here is one from last night in my town. First time I've taken them with this camera, and also with a digital camera, so help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Another thing you may want to consider when shooting fireworks, or for that matter any night shooting, is the effect of ambient lighting. Make sure you don't have any streetlights or any other light sources that will "bleed" into your shot. Lights that are far away are fine since they won't overpower your sensor, but lights that are a bit close can diminish the imapct of your shots.
Just a thought.

Those are awesome shots, guys!
Here is one that I took last night. This place had over 30,000 people viewing them. It was packed! I seen lots of photographers there. I wonder if any of them are a member here.
Hope you all have a wonderful day!

After getting pretty sloshed all day at Live 8 in Philly, we completely forgot they were doing fireworks out on Penn's Landing ... we heard them starting and rushed over there, but I didn't have time to get myself set up. Not bad, considering. Just wanted to share.
Fireworks in Old City
I love the streaks in this one. So electric.
More fireworks
Then Sunday night we shot off our own display out at my friend's farm. Sadly no wide-angle converter and nowhere to perch, but still damn fun.
Rockets
And they looked like this:
Great home fireworks
Even more fireworks
