I finished preparing these three prints for entry into the Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park's first photography contest. Kind of hard to get a good photo of them without reflections. First prize is $300, so wish me luck! The guidelines say that it's up to the photographer whether the photos are matted and/or framed. It just said that the prints had to be at least 8x10. These are 11x14 prints in a 16x20 frame. It's a juried competition, which I've never participated in before, so I have no idea what to expect. There will be an exhibition and awarding of prizes on July 9th. I suppose my biggest fear is really being totally out-classed but I figure nothing ventured, nothing gained. I also figured since this is just the first year, the competition level may not be quite so high.

They appear to be great pictures. I too have a chance to enter a local photography contest, but have yet to take any pictures for it. Good luck.

Is there a theme for your local contest?

With my local camera club membership I have access to a very nice mat cutter (Logan 650). This is the first time I've really given it a work out and now I'm hooked on doing my own. They look so much nicer than those more expensive precut jobs that are often just a bit sloppy.

One question for those with contest experience: What, exactly, is meant by a "juried" competition?

Good luck on the contest Judy. My local parks department is also having a photo contest during the month of June and I and in the process of taking pictures. It is so much fun. Getting back to you... Good luck!

A juried competition is one that has a panel of either professionals or peers. They will look at all the photographs and decide which one will win as opposed to a competition that the photographers or the puiblic decide on the winner.

a VERY GOOD LUCK!! to you!!

Thanks for answering my question. I wonder if most of those types of competition have the photographer's name remain unknown to the jurors until after the winners are selected? It seems that in a competition like that (especially local little ones like this), a "name" might have an advantage over an unknown (like me!)

The judges most of the time dont know whos photos, pictures or whatever are. :)
