Just for everyone's information. I got a stupid comment today. I normally don't reply but this idiot has never even participated in a challenge, so I had to say something and I did. I feel better :)

I've noticed that you've complained more than once about your comments.

It's the same comment two different threads. Is that illegal?

Certainly not illegal, although to clarify my point it was here in this thread you claim to have received a "stupid" comment from an "idiot" and also two weeks ago you trashed a commenter in the "Worst Comments Ever" thread.

I had no wish to start an argument. Rather, I was trying to politely help you realize that constantly complaining about the criticism you receive is disrespectful to the many commenters that are genuinely trying to help both you and others.

I trashed someone in a thread over "Worst Comments Ever" and then I mention that I got a stupid comment today and so now I am "constantly complaining". Okay whatever. I just wanted the person who asked the question to know that I did what I wanted to do. Wasn't trying to complain. In the "Worst Comments Ever" I was complaining, that was what the thread was about. Kind of the topic there. I also posted under the best comment ever, you forgot to mention that.

Or did you say to yourself, it wouldn't be fair of me to not give money to this movie's production staff so I won't go and see ANY movie... You see we vote every day based on or biases and personal tastes. Why is it supposed to be different here?

That's a little different situation. By not voting, I have not had an effect on the outcome (positive or negative). By not spending money on a movie, I have had an effect on the overall profit/loss of that production (as insignificant as that may be).

So, to your thinking, I should vote what I want, based on my beliefs, experiences, biases, etc.... If I don't like the subject, just vote a 1 and leave a comment along the lines of "nothing wrong with this photo, I just don't agree with the subject matter - 1"?

Didn't mean to offend anyone with any of the above. Just debating. :-)

Tim

I think if it provokes one to comment a 1 is a comment on one self not on the photo.

Actually, that was my point, and why there have been (a few) occasions that I skipped an entry, because I didn't feel it was fair to mark down an entry just because I didn't agree with the subject matter.

Just thinking about this: giving a comment and telling what you voted. I never say what I voted in the comment because I feel that is irrelevant to the comment. I'm interested in constructive comments (or in fact *any* comment) on my entries, but I can't quite see why I should need to know what the person voted? I guess a few people need to explain 'why I gave it a 4', but I would prefer a comment along the line of 'I liked this about you picture, but not that'. Am I alone in this?

Actually, I have never put what I scored an image in my comment. That was just for argument's sake.

And I don't feel it's fair to hold back my vote because I don't like the subject matter. Using your logic, if enough people don't like the subject of a photograph and refuse to vote on the shot then the score recieved will not be an accurate representation of what we the voters think...

Okay the comment was mine - and i would just like to say since i am being summed up as a bigot for it (in little detail, because detail will give away the photo) that Pauline totally misinterpreted what i had meant. Which i entirely blame myself because i used terrible wording to express myself.

I actually share the same religious foundation as Pauline and it was not intended to be offensive at all. I will reword it better (as i had originally intened to) when i get to it on my second round. My comment was not meant to be cruel or a religious attack, but because of my suck ability with words, it came out that way. It was meant to be a please explain.

Ah the joys of an impersonal medium like the internet. When the typed word is all we have to go on, it is easy to misunderstand the meaning of others.

That said, i wish Pauline HAD PM'd me instead of posting my comment to the boards, and we both would have been saved some heartache. Everyone feel free to PM me during the challenge if my comment has got you wondering, i prefer it that way.

I have taken the discussion in more details to PM, but let me publicly say i apologise for the confusion and hurt caused by my comment (and inability to properly express myself).

Elli, you have nothing to apologise for and as I have said in my PM to you and I would like to say publically, I should apologise for posting your comment. I should not have done so and as usual my hot head took control rather than my common sense!:)

If I can just, however put the record straight - I DID try to PM Mesmeraj the night the comment was made. I got back an "unable to deliver" message. I slept on it and decided next day that perhaps I shouldn't contact the voter until the vote was over and posted the original message asking for advice. It all took off from there into this debate. I was upset by the comment because it appeared to offer nothing but a comment on beliefs which I found difficult to accept when it was the only comment at that time I had received.

I have had a lot of helpful advice through this thread and thanks to those people especially those who have since commented ( and not voted quite rightly) on the picture.

So please accept my public apology, Elli, and I would never repeat my mistake in posting a comment again - it's not fair. I hope this will not put you off commenting on challenges.

The only other thing I want to say is that it was interesting seeing how people presumed they could identify my religion frm the pic:) I shall be careful not to take a pic of something really bad!!!!!!

Friends, Elli?

Bump because I want to make sure my apology to memeraj is seen.

of course friends Pauline !

I hold no grudges. Molehills become mountains so easierly, it has happened to all of us.
I say things thinking everyones mind works like my own, and according to my husband, i have the worlds most unusual thought processes (probably why my pics aren't big crowd pleasers, eh?) I will know to complete my thoughts before staring to write my comments in the future.

I dont hide my identity in challenges, so people can reply to my comments if they would like to. I don't see the problem in that. People who dont want returned remarks can hide, and those of us who don't hide IMHO dont mind feedback during the challenge.

It does concern me though that my PM is acting up - because i have people trying to contact me re:kids with cameras. Need to fix that!

No hard feelings Pauline :D Glad it is all smoothed out.

i dont see how a kind comment on a submission could fuel so many emotions. if anyone is not strong enough to accept honest opinions from others, then you really shouldnt be posting your work here in DPCHALLENGE because being commented is part of the fun and learning process.

You baked a cake and you liked it, but that doesnt mean its tasty to others. but its fine since you are eating it yourself. BUT... if you are going to put it online to be VOTED by others, then be prepared to get comments of all sorts, from good to bad (including blatantly honest ones)

...give someone a fish, feed them dinner, teach someone to fish, feed them for life :-)

Pauline, posting a thumbnail link is easy (I know this for sure 'cause they even taught me how to do it hehehe)

Open your pic, then right click with your mouse, when the box pops up, click on 'properties'. In the line that has the url address, copy the 5 or 6 digit no. towards the end (yours for this pic is 188783).

Then when you post, you'll see 5 little icons at the top of the box. One is 'B', 'i', then 3 with little pictures. Click on the last one, it says 'insert thumbnail link...' when you put your cursor over it. When the box opens up, just put in the number (188783). Then hit 'OK'.

That's all there is to it :-)

Sorry Shadow but I suggest you read the thread again! I am strong enough to take honest criticism, welcome it and hope to learn from it. This is all in the past, all been discussed ad nauseum and I am just posting as promised - TO RECIEVE HONEST CRITICISM!

:)

Well here it is, honest criticism...

I can understand why a couple of the comments got your goat.. but as for the photo itself there is really nothing to make it stand above the crowd. The connection to the challenge is strong on more than one level, so kudos for that, but aside from that it looks like you just threw a few things on a black sheet (one with visible dust spots at that) and took a photo of it. Additionally the focus seems a touch soft - this is the kind of shot you'd either have to go with an extremely soft, diffused look or have it tack sharp - as it is you're stuck in a kind of middle ground and it really doesn't work.

Perhaps you were a little hard done by, but this is the type of shot I usually expect to find below five. Anyway, I hope this honest criticism helps, if not, well, tough :).... good luck with future challenges!
