Here are a few images that i really liked and thought should have done better -

extremely creative, wonderful mood and color.

i have nothing but compliments for this photo, brings a smile to my face.

one from the master himself, jjbeguin, great use of light and shadow.

yes its a baby pic, but its a very well shot baby pic.

And finally here is mine which i think got hammered for not meeting the challenge but i personally still like it a lot as a photo.

Thank you. THe little girl one is mine. I am only confused as to why it finished so much lower than . Is b&w that much better? Mine finished 65th, this one 11th.

The ones I think finished too low..

The baby and child pics were well-taken shots, imho, and could have scored better, but the "sense of injustice" is starker with the above two.

Your shot is likewise very well taken, but I reckon apples challenge was temporally too near, and selective desat is still a tad of a dead horse.

I think by swinging is underrated, as well as .

I think the biggest difference between the above shot and isn't the B/W or color use. For me, I think there's a bit more drama in the B/W because of the pose and surrounding frame. Again, I think your shot was very nice indeed, but the oomph on comes from the extra questions that arise upon viewing it.

Yes, I thought this was very interesting. The hanger and flash on the black dryer door jarred me quite a bit, but the concept was a good one.

I think mine was OVERRATED...I should've gotten last!
I just wanted to lighten the mood and do something no one else did- at least I did one of those things! :)

I think I like the idea of having a public dissection of some sort, like this thread, after challenges...

So I tried to creat 'questions' and thought on my Construction entry...the big question seems to be "What were you thinking?" I can't win!

I gave that a 5. Technically nice and abstract, but a bit weak on meeting the challenge, creatively speaking.

i really liked this one - the composition, the creativity.

First, thank you Chris and all other commenters that justly so criticized my frame around the frame. After seeing it during the week, I realized how lame it is to have a frame in the "naturally framed" challenge anyway...
My question is, how much better would have this one be:
against

Edit:I am very happy: This one replaced my personal best!

Thanks JPR -- although given that this is my best-scoring photo in weeks, it's a little hard to take that it underperformed as well. At least no one questioned whether it met the challenge this time!

I added an out-take link to the photo's comment thread.

i missed this in my first post. I thought it was an excellent photo, a bit weak on the challenge but the framing is there if you look for it. I noticed that the commenter average score was a 8.313 from 17 people
:-)

This was mine. Thanks for the kind words! I haven't mastered the whole lighting thing and the laundry mat attendant was harrassing me. I originally wanted photos of clothes in the dryer but I liked this one of my wife. I was very pleased with the score..

A sub-5 for this one?

There are as lot of pics I thought should have done better. I want to know what the people here were thinking when they voted pics high that 1)were NOT framed at all 2) were not NATURALLY framed. I mean how can a pic that is obviously set up to be framed score high in a NATURALLY framed challenge and a pic that is naturally framed with a decent subject score low?

it goes back to every discussion here...a really good picture of a pear in an orange challenge will still rate higher than an average picture of an orange.

i have an excellent photo of my new puppy...maybe i should have submitted it for birds...oh yeah...

oh yeah and for the first time i actually though mine was an under performer...comments are welcome thank you

Here's mine, which I thought was framed by its tail, but I'll have to admit, and agree with the majority of the comments that it isn't REALLY framed, at least not with the frame as a major element. There were a couple of visionary people who did comment on what I meant to be the frame.

Surprisingly, this did not turn out to even be an all time low score for me, though very close. Yay for good Pear photos in an Orange competition!

Oh yeah, I think that, for THIS competition, my photo was an overperformer, but I'm not starting a thread on overperformers. I would have scored it a 4 at most.

Your one and only 10 vote - you are welcome. I love the pic.

Well I looked at the comments on a few that I thought did not meet the challenge at all - either obviously set up or not framed at all - that scored high and cannot believe what I read - "obviously set up but I like it anyway, 10" "not natural but I like it - 10" "Does not meet the challenge really, but good subject, 9" What is the point of having a challenge if a picture that does not meet the requirements can score high just because it is a good picture? I mean SO WHAT! It can be the best picture ever taken but if it DOES NOT meet the challenge, how can you vote it high? Oh, I get it, maybe it was the people who were high when they voted.

I don't want to single out any one image, but there was one that was OBVIOUSLY set up and not NATURAL at all that scored fairly well and it just bugs the hell out of me.

I am sorry that your picture did not score as high as you thought it would, but please try to be happy for others. I have NEVER done this well before and am VERY proud to be in 11th place. The same thing happened to me in the granular contest.

Sugar faces
Nightshy had a great shot

and got 42nd place with a 5.899 and I entered

and got 139th place with a vote of 5.224. Even though we were both in the 5's the placement is much different.

This is the biggest reason a caring artist creates for themselves alone, answering only to their own soul. It is while chasing public opinion that one becomes like the dog determined to grab its tail.

I agree totally! IF it does not meet challenge there should be a check button and a negative score should follow.
