Two questions came to me today while getting my butt dirty on a very old stutio lot.

When you are out taking pix of stuff, do you....

1)take pix of opportunites?

2) make opportunities happen for a pix?

3) create a controlled enviroment such as a stage to make your vision real?

Also...

Do you take pix because....

1) you are searching for your niche?

2) learning photography?

3) to make prints and sell professionally?

VVVEEEEERRRRRYYYYY Curious.....but need to go for now.

I like to take pix of opportunities. Especially at work. There I have a cameraman that lights the set and that alone presents enormous opportunity. However, my opportunity has limits through self regulation. I don't take pix of actors on the set, they have to be away from set in a differant setting.

I also do create a controlled enviroment to practice my own lighting abilities with the limited light sources I have in my inventory.

On the second question,

I am searching my niche, leaning twords sports.

Even though I have been in the film industry for almost 20 years, I am still learning the craft.

Part 1: I've done all 3

Part 2: I don't know why I take pictures. I guess ultimately I'm searching for photographs that make people smile, or say 'wow'.

part 1 - mostly 1 sometimes 2 rarely 3
part 2 - none of the above. I usually take pictures to capture something that interests/amuses/awes me or I create pictures I see in my head.

Yes to all.

Part 2
I want to communicate, mostly. Since that's not mentioned, I would choose learning.
A side note. I was just thinking this morning how sites like this are sort of like eating a sugar diet. We are encouraged to view hundreds of pictures and rate each one within less than a minute. The pictures that win are mostly eye candy but since we are used to it, everyone wants to start reproducing the winners styles. There are threads and threads telling us how to do it. Instead of sitting down and enjoying each morsel of a fine picture well prepared, we gobble up all the pretty pictures and dream of doing the same thing ourselves.
Note: this isn't a rant. it's an observation

I take photos because I am compelled to find ways of seeing the ordinary in extraordinary ways. I get frusterated so often trying to find a new, fresh and "never been done before" way photograph a subject that makes the viewer be moved in some way and come away remembering the shot because it made a lasting impression on them.

So I guess.... d. all of the above and then some....

Q1: Mostly 3, but 1 when they come up and 2 when I can.
Q2: 2 and 1, definitely not 3.

Q2: 3 (Mostly shoot for sales, but still take holiday pics and such)

1) Yes, of course.
2) I have been guilty of this on occasion.
3) Nope.

1) & 2) Yes, I think these two will go on forever.
3) I hope to eventually but haven't yet. You can speed this one up for me by visiting A Few Great Prints.

i like to take photos of things i find out there in my everyday existance...i find shooting for challenges very difficult but it has taught me alot...i take photos for pure enjoyment...if i happen to take one that someone i know will appreciate i frame it and give it as a gift...for example this photo was taken of the center piece at my friens son s bar mitzvah...i blew it up and framed it and gave it to them as a different kind of momento of the event

For the most part, I find what is presented to me in my local commute or travels for purposes other than going out only to take pictures. It can be an obsessive passion as well as a true blessing, in that it has made me so very much more aware of what is around me daily. A crack in a wall, a shadow, a child on a swing. With every turn of my head is a viewfinder in my brain, looking at the world around me.

With the exception of certain challenge shots for DPC and occasional "product shots" for selling things on e-bay or elsewhere on the web, since I retired as a professional photographer my images, without exception, are found, not created.

I make images because it is my nature to do so. There's nothing profound about it: it's what I do. That I sometimes sell these images (and I don't try very hard to do so, oddly) is incidental in my mind. I shoot because I see, and the more I shoot the "better" I see.

LOL - This is SO true for me as well. Whenever I stop to admire something or point it out to a family member - they all say in unison "GET THE CAMERA!" - with big smiles on their faces of course. ;^)

All of the above. They all have their place. I like to be a fly on the wall while using the surroundings, but sometimes you have to just make stuff happen. When it looks spontaneous on film is when you're successful.
