Hello friends,
Digital Photo Magazine contacted me through my pbase account. Here's the message.
"Hi Manuel
I'm writing from Digital Photo magazine, which is the UK's best selling digital photography and imaging magazine. You can check out the magazine at //www.digitalphoto-magazine.com
I've recently seen some of your images on the Pbase website and I'm interested in using some of them in Digital Photo. I particularly liked the images:
Krystal clear portraits: Fragile , Delicate, Hypnosis
Gaze
Eyes
Grace
Eyes 2
Santosh
...and any other pics you feel are strong enough for inclusion.
If you're interested in having your work featured, then please send a CD with hi-resolution files of your work to this address:
Chris Robinson
Creative Editor
Digital Photo Magazine
Emap Active
Bretton Court
Bretton
Peterborough PE3 8DZ
United Kingdom
In the first instance, choose upto 20 of your best images, save them as JPEG files (at Level 10 - 12 compression) in RGB format. As we may use the images full page or across two pages in the magazine, the bigger the image, the better! Please feel free to include brief notes (locations, camera/software used etc) on each image if you wish.
Any images that are published will be paid at our regular rates of ?60 per full A4 page / ?30 per half page.
Thanks for your time, and I look forward to seeing your work.
Kind regards,
Chris

Just asking for your advice guys since I live in the other side of the world.

I checked the address and it does match with that on the Emap site, so the request is most likely legit.
I don't know what the readership of DPM is, but £30-60 is pretty reasonable for <200k. I guess if it's their standard rates you've no choice anyway!
I don't see any reason not to go for it. Let me know if you'd like me to buy a copy and send it to you.
Edit: Oh one more thing - make sure they are aware of your location and they are able to pay you easily.

Librodo
As Paul said, this is definitely a legit publication, and if the email matches up to their published one, it sounds like a genuine offer.
Make sure the address you're sending to is also legit just incase but... it all sounds great!
I'd make a request that, as you're not local to the UK, that they add on to the fee an agreement to send you via the post 2 copies of the issue in which your work is featured. I'm sure they won't mind that at all.
PS CONGRATS!

WOW. What an offer. This is great news. I agree with kavey and ask for a couple of copies that your photographs appear in, it's no real exspense to them.
It is a very well know magazine, and I would of thought it was the real deal.
I'm sure you have more to gain then to loose. good luck in your decision. |

I am all ears...
My pictures have been sitting in my computer for quite sometime. The only exposure they have are in some internet sites (dpchallenge included). I shoot jpeg at medium format so the size might be a problem (as it won't match their specification...what is it btw?). I never thought I would need a bigger format as I am doing this just for a hobby.
Maybe I can ask for a year subscription?
I will contact the editor soon and will ask him about the specification. More advices will be appreciated.

It may be worth clarifying what supporting text they would include and whether or not they'd be willing to include your own website address or a direct email address. That way, you might benefit from the exposure generated too.
Certainly worth asking whether they'd consider giving you a one year subscription on top of the regular fees. Make sure you clarify where you live so they can make the decision based on the actual cost to them. You can always add that, if they feel this is unreasonable you'd be willing to negotiate (and if they come back to you to do that you can perhaps ask for a 6 month subscription or just a few copies of the issue involved instead). An annual subscription on top of the basic fees doesn't seem too much to ask, in my opinion.

Manny! Digital Photo Magazine is one of the best DP mag's around. I would post at DIC and they can tell you a lot about it. Several people there have been published in this mag. Congrats! Go for it! It's legit and the exposure would be great for you!

Thanks everyone for the advices. This is a GREAT community. I am still all ears (though I have to start reworking some of the post-processing since I had them printed at a smaller size then). Funny but some of the shots I intended to shoot for dpchallenge and the sizes are really that small. Some were post-processed at dpchallenge size format. :))
Anyway, Digital Photo only saw the small sizes and I would be lucky if I would have 2 0r 3 that they will finally like. However, to be contacted by them is already a great honor.
Many thanks for the info and suggestions. Kep them coming.

Hi, if this helps... I have contacted and have had featured images in a number of Photo Magazines in the UK (Not Digital Photo Magazine yet!)
I have been paid for featured images in Practical Photography (They also sent me the magazines that I featured in) They pay varied amounts depending on the size of image used. (in my case £80)
I have not heard of a magazine contacting 'cold calling' like this, but I suppose it happens... either way if they are in need of photos, I'll put a CD together and send it off...
As should a number of other talented people on this site...
I am also pretty sure they accept photos from international sources..
Well done..

It might be a good idea to ask them what becomes of the images you submit, copyright ownership, etc. How long does your CD get passed around within their organization, or stay in their filing cabinets? The ultra conservative, overly protective way would be to send files with a watermark, and then supply full-sized clean files only when they have commited to publish.
Your work is far above the average here at dpc. Don't give it away.

| I think this is an excellent opportunity to get wider exposure for your work which is brilliant! I wish you good luck with this and more success to come. Hey, it could even mean wider exposure for the site! |

I would try to contact him directly, by phone to discuss things one on one. There's nothing unreasonable about that.
The money sounds ok but the exposure is worth far, far more and will produce lots of work if you should so desire to expand your base.
Maybe it's time to consider setting up a web site to handle traffic and direct people to places where you might be able to sell your images. Strike while the iron is hot.
That's really awesome. Good Luck!!!
PS You will get blown away by the type of traffic this can create. A free subscription is nice but I believe you might be thinking small. The culinary course that I designed was mentioned once on CNN and NYC's Latin TV Network and we recieved over two thousand calls in less than three days. We had to hire 4 temps to handle the phones.

He contacted me several months ago and the address he gives and his name does show up in the magazine. I was contacted after he saw my stuff on Pbase and that's likely where he saw yours. I thought it was odd that he would contact people like that but maybe they're slow on submissions.
One thing I did find out that I wasnt exactly happy with is that if you submit images for the magazine and they do not get chosen they can be put on the CD that comes with the magazine. You do not get paid for those images. I didnt check the format they put them on the CD but the thought of my images being put on CD and distributed to everyone who buys that magazine was a little offputting, especially if they can copy them to their computer and do whatever they want with them.

I'd definitely veto that too. Not only the fact that they aren't paying for these images but also because submitting images for consideration for print shouldn't be tied in to giving them the right to use the images in other formats without permission.

Very good point. Thanks for the info. Knowing that things like these can happen, what do you suggest guys?
I've contacted the editor, the one who sent me the email and apparently he said he will send me the issue where my picture will appear but not the year's subsciprtion.
He also needs the the pictures ASAP. I haven's asked him about copyright and ownership. Maybe "moodville" answered the question indirectly...that they have ownership of the picture. I suppose homepage and email can't be included in the picture as well.
Is it worth the money and the "exposure" ?
Any suggestion, insight, comment?
Manny

i would say that it's definitely worth the exposure. i'm sure you would be credited (i would check on that one for sure), but the "fame" and bragging rights you will have would be worth much more than a payment (to me).
if this were a magazine that uses photos to support a story, i would consider that a different matter. in this case, the photos (and the photographers) ARE the story.
i'm not sure about putting the photo on the cd for distribution. i guess i would need more information about that. is it part of a presentation? is it low-res?
either way, i would say it's worth pursuing. |

Manny I think it would be wonderful for you to get such exposure, you most certainly deserve it!
As for all the concerns brought up while I think they are very valid, I think that since it is such a big magazine their policies shouldnt be too questionable.
But anyways a big big congrats! Wishing you all the best with everything that comes from this.

That's what I was thinking.. However the more I think about it, the more I think it must be very easy for them to take advantage of amateurs. The cover CD issue moodville talked about sounds questionable to me.
I would also ask if they get a perpetual licence to use the images you send. The magazines I've been published in pay a fee for the initial publication. If they want to print images again, they have to pay again.
