wish I had gone ahead with this one now.
The one I entered is at 5.5 and dropping.I went for the mass appeal thing with a rather cliche' postcard type.
Seems that anything with a depth of emotion, or requires thought bombs.
How would you have voted this, (top) and yes I know it leans.

Arghh, the mass appeal ;) your outtake has nice colors but statues don't do too well..

This is a first! Mocabela, don't you know that ribbons are sort of addictive in here? The one's who get them can never get enough :) your photos are beautiful.

i'm at 5.7 now, maybe I was right to go for the postcard image,
48 votes for 59 views, is it because the image is a familiar type, that more are voting on it, ie, they don't have to study the image to get the emotion, cos theve allready seen similar and remember from then.

is the judging always brutal here?

I think that it is quite specialised: once you get to know your audience a little, you can improve quite quickly. People get picked up on, and therefore pick up on, focus and contrast very heavily. Overdone subjects (eggs, chess pieces, water drops on glass, glasses, flowers) have to be done brilliantly to stand a chance: they get low points for ingenuity, and therefore have to be technically superior/exceptional to do well.

I am sometimes confused by the judging - but the comments are often helpful (even if only as an indicator of how someone is voting - eg "nice" probably means "an okay pic, that makes me want to comment, has no technical issues that spring out at me, but it is not interesting enough to make me exclaim too loudly". So even that has some merit.

When the voting ends, you will see the distribution of votes and that is very telling: lots of 5s, and your photo is just too middle of the road, probably with a technical issue here or there. Lots of 4s, and you should reconsider your photo and look for how it missed the challenge or what the technical flaws are. Lots of 6s, then gets a bit harder - less wrong with it, but it is missing the point of interest that would allow it to score higher. Lots of 7s, and you probably have a ncie image, that could score well, but fails only by contrast. Lots of 8s 9s and 10s and you have probably won.

If you are getting a lot of votes lower than a 4, then there are some serious issues: hard to believe that they wont have been commented on.

Good luck with spotting the issues and working on them. Learning Photoshop and Unsharp Mask was the first step - there may be a few more like that to overcome!

I wish everyone would have calibrated their monitors before voting...before you go saying something is too dark PLEASE be sure that you can at least see all the boxes in the bar at the bottom of the voting screen! :o)

You know you guys are harsh... I think that I captured something that I and professional peers that I have a lot of respect for is quite nice... but the scores are in the 4.6 range...
this little game is getting to be a bit old. I cant seem to figure out what the formula is (and there is one) around here... It is not technical or artistic quality thats for sure ... overmanipulation may be the key.

just frustrated.

another point on this challenge...am i the only person who doesnt live near a windmill???? nothing against them they are beautiful shots...its just strange to have never seen one in my 44 years of living ...and in this challenge they are everywhere??? (note to self....get out more)

Once again I will have the lead in views. This one I could get a 0 if it was possible and I would like the subject. Not the greatest shot. But gotta grow thick skin around here.

As I go through the photos in the Silhouette Challenge, I see a LOT of shadows. To me these are not silhouettes.
05/16/2005 09:18:34 AM · #38
I have only seen about 3-4 so far. The weird thing is a shadow is the opposite of a silhouette to me.

I have to say that some of the brutal scores come from just people's taste too. That I can tell by the comments. One person wrote on a different challenge (already done so this is not a spoiler) "too bad you could not move the people". To me they were a great deal of the story. To this person, a distraction. Sometimes you need to try to see what the artist saw. I think if it is technically on -- and is on topic -- and is original in thought/and or compositon, you should get some high scores. Just because I may have shot it different is no reason to knock down a score. But others don't see it that way.

Intersting thought. I went back to look at the defination, "Silhouettes are created by backlit subjects, which causes them to appear solid and without much detail. Submit your best silhouette taken this week"

By this definiation, I would think that some shadows would be allowed, as the would fall into that catagory of "without MUCH detail".

Should be another good one to score with lots of fun contraversy! Unfortuanately I was not able to enter this one, but I am going to have fun scoring. I see some really nice ones in there.

And this is part of my point... because the challenge is still going on I will not restate one comment that I got but it was without question a taste thing and I am sure that that commentor knocked down the score because he has a wish for the image ...

I have had images that have been technically awful score higher that some that are right on...

I'm finally happy I didn't start off in the 3's!!!! Hopefully it will continue to go up a little as most of my other entries have. I usually tend to pick up a few 1/10th points here and there before it drops toward the end of the week. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'd have to disagree here. The "without much detail" part of the challenge description, imho, is more flexible than the "backlit subjects" part for a silhouette to be a silhouette.

A shadow won't be won't appear "solid" once it's LIT, regardless of where the light comes from the front, back, side, below, above, diagonal, etc.

I agree 100%

a shadow and a silhouette are two totally different things.

I'm right there with ya... I'm very happy to be improving on my (albeit not very impressive) record of late! I'd love to have a 5+ finish again. :-)
