I was curious what it would take to win a ribbon or at least break the top ten so I calculated the average scores for 3rd place ribbon winners and 10th place for all 2005 challeges to date.
The average score for 3rd place is 6.94 with a range of between 7.37 and 6.27, the average score for 10th place is 6.53 witha range of between 7.06 and 6.01

You've got way too much time on your hands. Interesting status though.

Wow, that's pretty high! Seems like the average has been skewed by a rash of good work lately. I think BradP and Librodo are messing up the bell curve. ;-) |

I think maybe having Pro and Amateur Challenges would be beneficial... especially to the newbies' like myself...
Anyone else think that's a good idea? I'm scared to join, as I'm sure that members are primarily pro's... |

Manny I buy.
Crunch some numbers on my stats oh wise behind the scenes SC one.
I think you will find mine 180 degrees out of phase from Manny's stats.
There may have once been a day, but isn't this year.
(Only 3 over the 7.0 this year)
FuNnY thing is, I am a lot happier with my 5.5's than my 7.0+ shots.
Adding that you probably owe Manny an apology for using my name in the same sentance with his, in context to his stunning work/scores here. Seems kinda' like comparing Sesame Street's Big Bird and the Bald Eagle.
:-)

Nope -- jump in. In order to learn from your mistakes, you have to make some mistakes. If you don't make any mistakes, then you either will not get better, or you are already one of those "pros" you suspect are lurking about here.
The whole idea of this site is for you to present your best photographic interpretation of the challenge, and have the rest of the members tell you what they think, so you can learn from their comments. |

are you kidding?! Available bios show that absolute majority of the members are rank amateurs like myself. Pros are too busy making money off taking photos to play our games here.
Don't be afraid to enter, this is the only way to learn, and learning here is FAST.

I know this is not totally accurate because you would have to see how many votes per blue ribbon and divide the total score by that. But this is close enough:
2005 Stats
Challenges: 41
Avg Blue Score: 7.3379
Avg Score: 5.2990
Avg Midrange Score: 5.2901
Avg Low Score: 3.2418
Total Entries for 2005: 10629
Avg. Entries per challenge: 259
Total Votes for 2005: 3116775 <- Yes that Million
Avg total votes per challenge: 76018.90
Avg number of votes per Entry: 284.44
Total Comments for 2005: 132843
Avg Comments per challenge: 3240.07
Avg Comments per Entry: 12.14

The highest non-ribbon score is 7.849, though that challenge was weird scores-wise, I think.

Strangely enough, I'm much happier with 7's. Go figure. |

I thought the Master's Free Study 1 was weird because 7.03 was only good enough for 27th place in that one. |

Guess I am getting to the point of needing elbow room to diversify and develop other styles. My highest scoring shot is one I do like a lot, but anyone in the area could have done. One hit wonder - One shot, minimal PS work, just point & shoot.
I'm also wanting to make my shots in the camera instead of to quote you: dragging them, kicking & fighting, out of PS as I have found a knack for doing.
Just looking for a satisfying, comfortable niche. |
