I doubt that. But I've seen people print their artwork and use it as a prop in their photo. If you were to print several layers separately to transparency film (inkjet or laser), you could stack those on a light box and shoot an image of the composite, so long as those printouts do not comprise the "entirety" of the final photo. |

I don't know about any of you...but as for me...the day I picked up a digital camera and found out how fun it could be...is the day that I could no longer take a walk or a ride in the country and not see things in a new way. EVERYTHING is a chance at a great photo to me now. I see things I've passed by many times. Maybe don't think so hard...just get out and take some photos and I bet you'll find something that really pleases YOUR eye:)

Here's a suggestions for all those who are so bummed out by the lack of direction in this challenge. It says "This is your chance to put your new skills to the test" so think of a skill that you always wanted to master and get going. |

I'm thinking that for most people the problem is the competition factor. I think everybody just needs to relax and enjoy doing what they normally do when not shooting for a photo competition. If I decide to submit a great macro of a flower, so what if the hard core photographers don't like it. It's what I do best and there are many people out there who like my florals. I'm not sure that's what I'll submit yet, but it will definately be something I enjoy.

what shortredneck said is totally valid.
my approach to this week's challenge is as follows:
normally during the week, I take pictures all the time anyway, both for challenge and just because I like playing with my camera.
At the end of this week, I'll just select the most interesting shot, and submit it for the challenge : ).
I guess this challenge could be a problem if you don't shoot regularly without a challenge 'making' you.....
does anyone fit into that category?

You read my mind. I always take my camera just because its fun. My dogs got me up early this morning , so I went outside took a few shots of whatever appealed to me. At the end of the week I'll look back and choose what I like. Could be anything from my attempt at a set up shot to a snap I took this morning. And dont worry I didnt take a single shot of my dogs, even though I have 12 brand new puppies to choose from HA!

I somewhat fit this category. I carry my camera everywhere I go and I try to take pictures but the weather down here has been so gloomy (there has been a shower EVERY day for the last month) the only things I can take pictures of are in my house, and when I''m home, I''m tired of a full day. The challenges are a help because they force me to think and go out and get a picture of something. The challenges spur my creativity.
Well next weekend I''ll be going out of town so hopefully I can take some pictures while I''m away and have enough time to post them before midnight on sunday.

What good advice. I think I'll take my pukey little camera out and shoot what CHALLENGES ME, using techniques and skills learned from others helpful COMMENTS. Course, someone will complain that it was done before and better ... but it will be my best, right? New skills. I like that. |

I think I may be misreading a comment in this thread, but I think it's easy to avoid the "I've seen this before" comments -- at least if it was here that they saw the shot.
If you're consciously imitating someone else's piece, just make your title read something like "Concrete Grill (Tribute)" -- that let's people know that you're imitating the photo "Concrete Grill".
If you're re-shooting something you've done before, add "(Reshoot)" to your title instead of "(Tribute)".
That's what I'd do anyway....

So, since it is a free study, how about letting us do whataver photoshop trick we can to create the image we want? |

I am shocked that there isnt a debate about what meets the criteria for Free study. |

I think that would be an intersting challenge for another week, maybe everyone start with the same shot and see what you can make of it in whatever digital darkroom you use. But I think this week should be a straight shot. In fact it would have to be since some entries are in and it wouldn't be very nice to change the rules midweek. :)

I myself are going to judge the Free Study contest but the effort someone put in to getting that shot..I have a problem judgeing photos that have been put through the "Photoshop Ringer"..I like to see what people can do with there cameras and the ideas they come up with..Not what they can do on the computer..no offence to anyone, I am not saying that munipulated photos arnt nice, this is just my personal taste..

Yes, but. A newbie's best might be a quick snap by a pro. We rely on the educational comments and mysterious scores to hone our developing skill. That doesn't mean that a picture weakly executed was carelesly done. Maybe the photographer just didn't have a clue what NEEDED to be done.
As a Free Study (which I support), an ungrounded newbie might thrash around shooting a bit of this and that instead of a week spent perfecting (to the best of her/his ability) one clearly defined subject. That could weaken the final submission.
This is a good week for seeing how well-trained eyes are.
Or maybe I'm just obsessed. |

I like the idea of free study because I go out and take pictures anyway of other things than the contest for that week. The trouble right now is that we are in a record heat wave and it is 106 degrees right now and I would rather be inside with the air-conditioner. I am not a fan of still life for I would much rather capture my images outside. I don't know about the rest of you but it seems like I get a good picture to enter the week after that contest is over. These contests make you more aware of what to look for in your photographs in the future. |

This is DEFINITELY the week to carry your camera EVERYWHERE you go.
You never know what you might see or what you might miss if you don't have it! Since anything can be a candidate, it opens up the entire world for you to roam around in hoping to get lucky. Try to see everything as a potential photograph.
Soon you too can start befuddling your mate, when you stand there dumbly staring and she says, what are you looking at, and you say 'that sunbeam is sooo amazing' :) |
