8.6, very nice... it makes sense that it would be from the olden days of dpchallenge

Yeah, the thing you have to realize is that back then, it was easy to pull out a 6.0+ -- now, it's quite different. My prediction is -- that high score will NEVER be beaten.

very true... anything over 6 is more than respectable these days

A quick run through archives shows the top 2 more recent scores (from 2004) being Kiwiness at 8.013:

and Jacko the BugMeister at 8.092:

Best of 2005 to date is Zoomdak at 7.764:

I do like the subject, composition and dof of this photograph, but i think the more intense competition forces people to be really creative, so it probably wouldn't do as well in a current challenge. I would probably give it a 6

IMO this shot, in the same challenge today, would rate approx. 6.8 to 7.0; the lighting, composition and DoF really work for this shot. The exposure is spot on, and the leading lines are tremendously effective. It's also perfectly sharpened, with no artfacts but beautiful renditon of the texture in the table. The tie-in to the challenge also works on two levels.
Today, it would get niggles for the dust specks on the table (he could not remove them under the classic rules, which are much like today's basic rules).

librodo really killed the competition with this one too...

I agree, BTW, that "Eight Ball" is unlikely to be unseated unless someone comes in with a perfectly executed shot of a once-in-a-lifetime event in an exotic location, with perfect light, LOL.
Scoring today is more difficult, and the general quality level of ribbon-winning submissions is very high. With the Members' Challenge winners typically scoring in the 7.0 to 7.6 range, an 8.6 is 1.3 points above the mean for blue ribbons. That's about five standard deviations for you statisticians out there. Really puts it in perspective.

Yer right, I missed that one. Pity the categories aren't rankable...

The highest rated shots are here

was quite recent, and was an 8.388

Missed a lot I guess. I think those 8's look like 6's on my hi-res, small-font monitor. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

It's that lack of sleep, row-bear...

What's even more interesting is the shot that got the red ribbon in the tables challenge. It's a cute shot, but in today's DPC, there is practically no way it could have done that well.

You're being kind. It is a cute snap, but it would have gotten torn to shreds today. I would predict at most a mid-4's finish for both it and the yellow ribbon shot from that challenge.

Since we are on somewhat of the same subject....

This photo was the first blue ribbon winner ever:

It scored an 8+. What would you give it today for the same challenge theme?
