Here are a few I thought should have finished higher than they did:

-finished 13th, fit the challenge better than most.

-finished 17th, probably needed to look a little less like she was just sleeping and more like she was bored.

-finished 29th, this guy really looks like he wishes he had something better to do.

What do you think about these shots?

Are you suggesting this image should have finished higher because it fit the challenge better than the ones above it? It is a bit presumptuous of you to think, isn't it?

Are you suggesting this should have finished higher because she DIDN'T look bored enough???

Again, are you suggesting that the image should have finished higher because it better fit the challenge? Again, that would be very presumptuous to think.

Your image, "the Basilica's dome at sunset", in the Sacred Places challenge was one of my personal top three picks for that challenge but only finished 29th. I thought it was better than my own image in it that finished 6th. Obviously, I think yours should have placed higher based on its photographic merit.

I've had images that scored lower than they should and, GASP, even those that have finished higher than they should.

But the voters have the final word. :)

This was THE one for me. (And, apparently, a few others agreed.)

I am suggesting that it should have finished higher because it fit the challenge so well and because it is a high quality photograph; IMHO better than some that finished higher.

Here I think it is a higher quality photograph than some that finished ahead of it but is held down by the confusion surrounding sleep vs. boredom.

I don't understand what you mean by being "presumptuous" in this context. Perhaps you should just take it that I put a high value on meeting the challenge. I guess that I value that a little more than the voters. In my thinking there can be levels of fitting the challenge, it's not just a does or does not thing. And the different levels affect my vote differently. Hope that makes sense.

I don't think it's hard to meet the challenge if you try. But often I preceive that people are discounting the importance of meeting the challenge in their quest to go "out of the box"; or to simply meet the tastes of the voters.

Thanks for your kind words about my Basillica shot. I looked back at yours in that challenge. I scored it very high. Yours has dramatic impact while mine is pleasant to look at. Both fit the challenge well.

I agree that the voters have the last word, always.

Harvey,
Thanks for the compliment. I took the photo of the two teenagers sitting in the concert. Believe me, that wasn't staged. I got a lot of comments on it. Some loved the color tones, some didn't, which I think kept my score down. I actually could have made it brighter, but left it a bit dark and dull to reflect the actual low lighting and atmopsphere. I was happy with it. This was my first entry into a challenge. My second entry is being judged right now and it's doing a bit better but I thought it would do really well because it is so different than all the other photos. We'll see. Thanks again for liking my photo.

This is one of my favorites from the bored challenge that I thought would finish higher...

Awwwww, shucks. . . thanks Coolhar!!! I submitted the Homeless lady, and she too was very candid, and when I saw her on a beautiful, bright Sunday afternoon with that look on her face, eyes closed, trying to just keep to herself and not be noticed or bothered, I definitely got a feeling that there was NOTHING but boredom and dreariness in her life. I thought it would score better than 5.9, but it sure isn't the first time the dpChallenge voters have broken my heart :) (just kidding - sort of) I'm sure it won't be the last time either since I'm disappointed in the score I'm getting on the cemetery challenge too at 5.58. Oh well. Oh and I especially liked the picture of the bored kids at the symphony too. I thought that was an awesome picture!!!

Thanks again for the notice!!!

I'm not suggesting that you do not put a high value on "meeting the challenge". That is your perogative as a voter. You should vote as you see fit.

What is presumptuous is the implication your own interpretation of "meeting the challenge" is correct and matched by other voters but they ignored it anyway.

Though rare for me to do, I gave an image a 1. It was a long time ago. It was not a particulary good image to start with but the last straw for me was that it had absolutely and totally nothing to do with the challenge topic. It finished last.

Later I looked at the image and it contained a detailed explanation by the photographer how it met the challenge. I was deeply touched. I don't believe that photographer ever submitted an image again. I doubt that the "1" I gave caused them to give up, but it contributed in its own small way.

Ever since then I've never presupposed I knew better than the photographer about meeting the challenge. Now I give extra credit for meeting it particually well as I interpret it but never mark DOWN for failing.

That is my choice, nobody else has to agree. That is my perogative as a voter. :)

I am not presumimg something that you are not, we are just scoring it in different ways. I vote a 1 in almost every challenge. And I always vote at least one, or more, 10. I try hard to use the whole scale.

I will say this, although I came in 13th, I really liked all the photos that came in 1-12. Any one of them could have finished top. I am content with the knowledge that I made such good company. I don't feel bad coming in after any of them.

Your title helped me to understand your lighting decisions.

I love that!! I have the same feelings about honoring someone else's ideas on how their photo meets the challenge. I wish there were more voters that felt that way! That's my perogative as a voter too!

Hello, I got a blah score on my bored photo Im afraid I had one oh those cheesy photos that bored the viewer because it was non interesting, It was only my 2nd submission in a challenge and I learned a lot from it... well not enough to score well on "beginning" but I hope to improve.
