You can use them with an adapter on Canon DSLRs, Pentax DSLRs, and Sigma DSLRs with excellent results. No problems with infinity focus or anything like that. Of course, they are NOT auto focus and metering can be a challenge--You may actually have to think about it.
Using these lenses in this was seems MUCH more popular among Europeans than Americans. Still, if you have any interest in such things, check out:

Even if you aren't interested, please, post a critical comment or something! This way, perhaps this thread will stay on the board for more than 5 minutes.

Thnx for the link. Search function is really bad around here. I swear, I did a search on "M42" before posting. You think that it would have returned something! Go figure. |

I think M42 is too short for the search function (try pentax or screw) but thanks for the link - that site looks *very* interesting.

Yes, the search function is limited. What I do to get 'round this is to use the Google Toolbar "search site" feature. That usually turns up far more results, and of course you can do a more complex search.
Edit:
O yeh, like a few others here I have the Peleng 8mm fisheye in M42 mount. I also have a Zeiss 75mm f/1.5 "Biotar" lens that is a thing of beauty. I just bought a (really cheap, <$60) 50mm f/1.4 lens just for the heck of it. I'm also looking at a couple more manual M42 lenses. It's a great way to get some high-quality, fast primes. Ya just gotta do your research (or take your chances, LOL).
The Canon EOS bodies will take more different lenses than any other body that I know of. That's because the lens mount to sensor distance on the EOS bodies is quite short, allowing for an adapter between without loss of infinity focus. Oddly, old Canon FD lenses cannot be adapted (there is an adapter but it has a glass element and it degrades the optical quality).

<--- happy M42 user
Peleng 8mm
I'm seriously considering getting a long M42 lens to satisfy my need for telephoto. I'm mostly a short range guy, but not having a long lens really stinks ... and shelling out big bucks for occasional use may not be the smartest thing to do. I'm still weighing my options at the moment :) |

Be careful searching for screw on the internet ;)
there have been several threads here lately on this subject. I was over a at friends house on monday and we played around with his hanimar and praktica lenses and my vivitar on our rebels.
My daughter earlier in the day at the park, a Vivitar 135mm 2.8. Tough to get teh focusing done fast...
Again, at the park, which is near the airport. Vivitar lens again, Infinity focus.
Using 3 extension tubes and a tripod...this is an HO scale hopper car. The rail is .83 inches in height. Again, the vivitar lens.
All items bought on ebay - the adablter eas under $15, the lens $24, the tubes $24. So for $65 I got quite a bit of versatitily.
