There several M42 mount prime lenses on e-bay for cheap. Does anyone have any experience with these older lenses? Is there one or more that was "The Lens To Have" back in the day?

I've ordered a Peleng 8mm fisheye and it comes with an EOS to M42 adapter ... figured I'd see what else I could attach to it :)

Stand by for further instructions...

edit:

Here:

is a recent acquisition, a Carl Zeiss 75mm f/1.5 Biotar in M42 mount. It works great on my 10D, and the image quality is stunning. I bought this because I was familiar with the quality of this particular lens and the condition was beautiful and the price was right.
It can be a bit difficult to determine which lenses are worth pursuing, and even more difficult to find some of them in M42 mount in good condition. So many older lenses have fungus, operational problems, or excessive cleaning marks or other damage to the glass/coatings.
When you do find a good one, it can make you smile from ear to ear. the "hunt" is worth the effort!

I have a Mamiya Sekor DSX1000B SLR which I bought back in 1976. The prime lens on it is a 55mm f1.4 Mamiya lens M42 screw fit (also known as a Pentax fit). Its a brilliant lens and I am going to get an EOS adaptor. I only bought Mamiya lens's. From what I can remember Pentax produced some good glass back then but I could not afford them!

I have 3 Carl Zeiss Jena lenses - Tessar 2.8/50, 3.5/135 and Flektogon 2.4/35, all of which I would recommend. The 50 was dirt cheap but the other 2 are very much in demand and it took a lot of auction watching before I got them on the cheap.

The Asahi Pentax Super Takumar's seem to be highly regarded too, though I have only managed to get hold of one, the 1.2/55, so far.

Here's a question for you ... what does fungus on a lens look like? I'm sure my lenses don't have any as they look clean, but I wouldn't know what to look for if they did!

hi hopper,

i bought the peleng 8mm and it is a great lens, it is a newly made lens so no worries about fongus or scratches
fully manual, it takes a bit to get use to it, but once you do it is quite nice

Christina's stuff is so damn good, I had to give it a shot. Of course, her 10mm Nikon costs a lot more money ... I'll be kickin' it "ghetto" style.

Here's a really extreme example...

Most cases are small spots, not as widespread as this. If the fungus is easily visible, the lens is probably damaged beyond recovery.

Here's a camera repair outfit in New Jersey that claims they can "remove fungus from lenses". See the bottom paragraph on their FAQ page. The link is: camerarepair.com

I'm not reccomending them, just found them thru Google.

Asahi Super-Multi-Coated and SMC Takumar lenses are outstanding. My favorite is the 135mm f3.5 (they are plentiful and cheap), and I am trying to get a good copy of the 200mm f4. I also have the 55mm... they are a dime-a-dozen on ebay.

The focusers on these lenses are like butter!

Kirbic, that is a beautiful Zeiss! Outstanding find.

just a follow up: THE PELENG 8MM LENS RULES!

I am awaiting an adapter, but got a Vivitar 135mm 2.8 last week..$24 delivered! All metal construction, very robust feeling compared to my EOS lenses. Very mechanical.

That peleng looks cool, but not cheap in absolute dollars.

Kris,
Congrats on the new glass, I think you'll have a lot of fun with this one!

@ Prof_Fate: The price on the Peleng has definitely risen a bit in the past year or so since I bought mine (I paid about $170 USD), but it is still a very good value. The bottom line is, if you like to work with fisheyes, it's a very worthwhile lens to have in the arsenal.

Got my chinese adapter today...took a couple of quickie shots

Both shots with a Vivitar 135mm 2.8. The portrait one is at 2.8, 1/25sec, handheld...and the other is of a sweet potato with a short adapter tube, handheld unrecorded exposre/F stop. (no exif data on the latter!) Both at ISO 100 on a Rebel.

Observations...need to use a tripod for macro shots at anything beyond 2.8..the lens stops down and gets dark and hard to focus. Also, shutter speed drops to 1/5 sec in a sunny window...I am used to macro where i hold the lens about 1 inch ffrom the subject. The 135 and short tube keeps me about 18 inches away.

Focusing will take practice for pin sharp shots. Anyone have any suggestions on improving manual focus technique?

is the guy i got it from - a few days under 2 weeks to my door. it is metal, pushes the 'stop' pin in and works. I went for the cheapest - if i had mutliple lenses i'd likely go with one of the auctions i saw that had 3 for $20 or something like that, so you can leave the adapters on the lenses. And yes, you get focus to infinity.
