I see your point about keeping these things less competitive, but how would auctioning them off help? The intent is to get someone a membership or a better camera who will actually help this site and somehow contribute to the betterment of the world in general by having been given that little step up.

I think we were looking to benefit people in general, not just people at DPC.... but as I said earlier the mission statement is in the works.... Maybe under priveleged children/adults who could use photography as a means of expressig themselves... (again a work in progress) I don't think this is intended to be a DPC charity... but hey, I could be wrong.

I have a Sony Mavica FD83 I could donate in all its .3 megapixel glory. Oh wait, I wouldn't want my worst enemy to have this camera. All those freakin' floppies.

I don't know maybe highest average fo the people who want to sell a camera ,vote to pick a number .anyway!
I don't think it would really matter .I think the end result of somebody winning a dream camera for themselfs and all the members who kicked in few bucks gets to see what they can do with it,I just think we have means to help people with there photography more this way thats all. |

I'm in no way the spokes-person for this endeavor, but I think the point is to provide people in need with equipment, in order to express themselves....
Not a contest, competition or raffle to give people with decent equipment "dream" equipment...
We seek to be a non-profit organization, to better people's lives... or something like that...

Yes, I think we must have come to the same conclusion simultaniously. Istead of a ribbon winner we give the four memberships away to the four non-members who have the highest average score from their best four challenges in the months of April and May. If that goes smoothly we can then think about the DSLR. That would assure that someone just popping in and taking a ribbon doesn't walk away with everthing and probably go to someone who was both dedicated and consistant.

I'm talking about something totally seperate. I'm sure we could do both at once. And a basic DSLR is not exactly dream equipment. It would be considerded the minimum required equipment for anyone venturing in to photography as a career.

I think this turned out to be something I can't really relate to also. There are many folks at DPC who use photography to let their souls sing and to even perform self-therapy. It isn't always DPC-ribbon-winning stuff, but how do you score a measure of the soul? I think for me personally, it is better to try to help in my own little corner if I see something I can do for someone who just seems to need it right then, regardless of whether their photogrpahy is great. I still support all good things here!

Well I guess perhaps I should drop the idea I mentioned as it hasn't gotten any positive feedback. The other about the non-profit organization sounds like a great idea - just not for me. Too organized and too many rules. I'll keep an eye and see how you all are doing with it and I wish you all luck. Martin.

I am in the same boat sort of. We will just both keep on the look out for when and where we might be able to do some good, OK? I personally thank you for wonderful spirit you brought to nearly 24 hours of DPC and hope it continues to feel this wnderful!

I never meant to shoot down people's ideas... just wanted to make sure people didn't get confused as to what we hope to offer with this endeavor... I don't want people thinking we're all about upgrading fellow DPC'ers equipment, if thats not our goal... with some of the posts, thats the impression I had gotten...

| I think what Martin is suggesting is something like the "extreme Make-over Home Edition idea, whereby people submit an essay and video ( in this case photo essay or seperate challenge,as to why they are desereving and then the producers decide who is in need and builds them a house ( in this case upgrades their camera). Kinda like a scholorship application. I don't think its a bad idea, just needs to be structured to suit DPC community. |

There are just two completely separate ideas going on, with the only thing in common is that they involve money.
I think the issue of prizes for challenge winners is a valid one for discussion (and has been in the past), but it's inappropriate for this thread. Perhaps you can start a new one if you want to revisit the issue.
I heartily second whoever said that this is a long-term enterprise which should not be rushed into. What you want is a 501(c)3 non-profit, tax-exempt corporation with an educational mission. You probably do not want a Foundation, though.
I highly suggest whoever is going to front this project during the initial phase check out the legal resources at Nolo Press, where they have books on forming corporations (including non-profits), complete with many fill-in-the-blank forms which you can use for most of the paperwork. But there's a lot to work out ... starting with what state do you incorporate in -- there's no provision for forming a corporation which is internet-based (yet). There would probably have to be at least one annual meeting where the Board members are physically present, and I think the minimum number of members is three, although you can have pretty much as many as you want. I think the incorporation probably requires a minimum three signatories -- I don't know if they can be mailed around or if they have to be signed all at once.
The main elements are the Articles of Incorporation, which include the "Mission Statement" (although I think a different term is used), and Bylaws, or methods/rules of operations.
Take a long time and hash these out thoroughly before you start, or you will end up re-hashing them interminably en lieu of performing the actual mission ...
Oh, and it should be kept a distinct entity from DPC.
As a non-profit, it would be in a position to solicit discontinued cameras and accessories for placement in schools and for the needy. It could send (maybe even stipend) people to go to schools, community centers, shelters, etc. and give classes in basic use of the cameras, or more. It could try and get old computers to "the needy" so they can edit and share their photos.
The kids at my son's school are always wanting to use my camera to take some pictures ... |

Nope not there. I also PM'ed Dave about being involved in this project and never got an e-mail back from him. Maybe he had too many replies.
