If seagualls and pigeons count I wouldn't mine this challenge.

one of my favorite photos. a bit different from traditional bird shots. wonder how it would do in a challenge. |

I'd give it a 9. After scoring the "beach" a 1. Damned beach.

I love this shot. It has such great contrast.
That would score high for sure in a bird challenge.
PS I would love a bird challenge

To require that the birds be in flight, incidentally, would be a cruel thing to do and would give a HUGE advantage to the Big Glass dSLR shooters among us. Even my prosumer 5700 is virtually useless for motion pictures because of shutter lag, and the point-and-shoot people wouldn't have a prayer. besides, there are birds that do not fly; ostriches, penguins, and kiwis come to mind. And birds that swim; penguins again, gannets, loons, cormorants.
Furthermore, let's define "flight"; is a bird "in flight" if it's taking off from a pond but its feet are still in the water?
Just "birds" is fine. The challenge might get more intersting if it REQUIRED "birds" plural; no portraits of individual birds.

Hey, I like that. It would add interest and maybe keep the number of static portaits down.

Birds.. I like that. I might try to get some migratory birds tomorrow on the way to work...they were 'playing' in the parking lot - there was s stiff breeze and they were 'floating' in it, about 10 feet outside my car window as I ate my burger, about 4 feet off the ground..amazing.
Since every challenge has it's interpretations...are all these valid?

This was taken this past Saturday. This Mallard poses but keeps one eye on me and my camera. Yeah definitely "Bust a Challenge" I am locked and loaded... |

I just remembered that I have the oldest wildlife refuge/bird sanctuary in North America a couple of miles away ... in the heart of downtown Oakland!
You all might also be interested in checking out NestCam, which is monitoring a pair of Peregrine Falcons nesting on the 33rd floor of PG&E's San Francisco HQ.

That's a dramatic shot. How about a some careful dodging so you can make out the outline of the wings a little more clearly than now. |
