My lovely place of employ is coming down with a bonus of about 800 bucks for me, and I'm seriously considering sinking that into some good glass for my camera. Currently, I own the kit lens, the Canon 1.8f 50mm and the Sigma 70-300 5.6.
If you were me, what would your next lens be?
Thanks in advance!

what kind of photography do you like to do?
My thoughts...
a 550EX flash
a 90mm macro (or a 105mm macro depends on brand)
tamron or sigma makes a 24-75 or 28-75 2.8 lens...nice fast walking around lens
10-22 or 12-24..something wide is nice.

I've been looking at this one (but won't be able to get it for a while) and have heard really great things from Jacko about it. If you like to do wide angles this might be something to consider. Canon 17-40mm f/4 L

Definitely agree with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 recommendation and the 90mm Macro, I'm particular to the Tamron 90mm f/2.8. You can actually get both of these lenses for about $800.
Both are tack sharp, fast and come with the lens hood. You would also have 2 excellent portrait lenses. A big PLUS!

Thanks for all the suggestions thus far.
As for what I usually like to take, it's been mostly 'walking around' nature and urban type shots. I do *some* portrait work, but I've found the 1.8f lens is just fine for that.
I have to admit, I was leaning toward the Tamron AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di Zoom, but I don't know anyone who actually has one. The reviews are stellar.
The macro lens isn't something I'd considered... I think I might. :)
Thanks!

I would seriously consider the Canon 100mm EF f2.8 Macro. It is very highly rated and you should be able to get one for a bit over $400. Check here for ratings on this and many other lenses.

If you want good glass stick with Canon. And get an L series lens if you can afford it. The glass is great and I think a very important thing is the way they are made. Logic says that you have to cut corners somewhere to make a lens that cost less, it usually is in the mechanics. Canon lenses work better. |

I've got one, and this lens hardly ever leaves the camera body, since it's so versatile and perfect for general walk-around stuff. For example, my 'Old & New' entry was taken with it:
and it turned out ok :o)

I second this opinion. Excellent value, very good glass, versatile zoom range, although not as fast as the EF 24-70mm f/2.8, which costs a pretty penny.
And... I always return to this one: the EF 70-200mm (f 4 and non-IS, if you want to stay within budget). It's not really a walk-around lens, although... many appear to take this lens on walks. ;-) It's a superb outdoor portrait lens, too, with a wonderful bokeh and probably the best glass there is. IMO, the cost is laughable for such a jewel.

This lens, the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5/4.5 USM AF also looks quite interesting. I haven't seen any tests/reviews yet and it is not in stock at BH. Would make a nice compliment to a 24-70.
