A friend wrote an article for our local astronomy club newsletter (which I edit) about egg-balancing on the equinox (using it as a jumping off point for "unbalanced" science in general). I decided it needed an illustration so I got out some eggs, balanced them on my kitchen counter, and shot away for awhile.

What do you think of the following two? Composition, crop, tones, shadow-play, etc.? Like one better? Ideas for better egg-balancing shots?

I like the second one the best. The lighting is more pleasing. On the first one you can see some wipe marks on the counter, and they're a little bit distracting. Nice shots, though!

The second one has a 3D look.

Clone or blur the wipe marks in the backlit one, and it has an unearthly, "alien" feel to it that's very appealing. That's what I'd do. Being as how this is an astronomy mag...

I also like the second one best.
The first one is "dead-centered", it's shadows are plain and boring IMO. It simply has no interest to me.
The second one is just wonderful. Plain egg but so much to see in the photo. the lights, the shadows, the shades of gray, the shape and the curves. Just beautiful.

I agree. The second one. But I would take out some of the black from the whites or neutrals on selective color in PS. I really like the elusivity of this photo:

Thanks for the comments everyone. I took utro's idea and went for a more high key look in the second image:

But the final illustration for the article will be somewhere in between this and the original. The high key look is too light for a printed B/W newsletter.

Here is an idea I took this shot for a challenge a while back :)

That's really eggcellent Coley. I couldn't find your "how I did this" shots though, I'm eggceptionally curious...

Ask yourself why the laces are tucked under the strap and you should be able to answer your curiosity. ;)

OK, I'm guessing the ballerina is laying on her back with her feet in the air, holding the eggs and board against the bottom of a desk or something. Missed that little detail!

That's my guess. Sorry to seem cryptic and not just state outright what I thought, but I believe that we learn more when we try to work puzzles out on our own--even if a little hint is needed sometimes.

As for your egg pics, I like them much. The lighting in the first is more to my preference, though I'd like to see it in portrait if that would fit your purposes. I think the long vertical with shadow included would accentuate the concept of balance well.

The hint was great. I suspected something like inverted trickery but never stopped to look closely for any clues...

Ah, the need to turn that one to portrait is obvious now that you mention it:

thanks for the input all, a fun little diversion this afternoon.
