I have a Digital Rebel and I am looking for a good lense that can capture candids and do portraits in varying light conditions...price is an issue, but I am willing to take all suggestions, Thanks.

Gee I hate to agree with everyone, but with the crop factor 50mm 1.8 is an 80mm equivalent, and with the great DOF and low price, there is nothing that can fill you stated needs beter.

I really like the 50 for posed 3/4 length shots or couples, but it is quite short for head/shoulder shots...

It depends what sort of portraits you want to take - I use a 50, a 100 and a 70-200 all for portraits, depending on what I'm trying to achieve.

Ditto. The 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens but the 85mm will give better DOF effects that are often complimentary in portraiture. I own the 50mm f/1.8 and an 85mm f/1.2 so I have had some use with both focal lengths.

I have to agree with the recommendation, am absolutely amazing lens and a bargain compared to some high-end L zoom.

I haven't taken my Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di lens off my camera, since I got it. I've done a couple model shoots and an engagement photo session and it's worked great. I got mine for $300 new.

so basically anything that is a short to medium telephoto lens - in the range 50-100mm or so and with a fairly fast aperture to give you easily controllable background softness.

I really hate using zooms for portraits. As much as possible, I try to factor the camera out of the whole thing - setting it and forgetting it as much as I can, so that the whole session is about interacting with the subject - not playing with a camera. I find a prime helps with this by giving one less thing to fiddle with - my feet work fine as a zoom on this sort of scale...

I placed my order for the 50mm this morning. I played with it considerably in the store, and was impressed enough to actually order it. I'm hoping to improve my studio and portrait skills with it.

There are a few cases where I'm shooting a large enough group portrait that 28mm just isn't wide enough and I'm forced to put my kit lens back on the camera (I really hate doing that!). But otherwise, I agree with you. I absolutely love mine. It's both my "all around lens" as well as my "portrait lens".

Every now and then (if I have a lot of room to work) I'll put my Canon 75-300 IS lens on and use it for portrait work. It doesn't open as wide as the Tamron, but the longer telephoto still creates impressively shallow DOF.
