I'm so glad someone else feels this way! I have a friend that keeps getting mad at me for wanting to photograph my daughter! He thinks I'm playing the child card in trying to get votes! |

I just want to chime in that when I post photographs of kids for challenges, I'm never playing a "child card"..
#1. you'd have to be stupid to think that playing that card on DPC gives you any amount of advantage whatsoever.
#2. I have to take photographs of, and submit, subjects that I know that I am *good* at taking.. and taking photographs of children is probably my strongest area.
#3. A person tends to take photographs of what they have available. I have children at hand..
So.. that's all. I do branch out as well, but when I do, I find that I take, mostly, mediocre images.. *shrug*

Personally that thought never crosses my mind because there ARE many images of children which are very universal in appeal. I think the problem is that it's harder for many people, when looking at images of their loved ones, to be objective enough to work out which ones might appeal broadly to others and which ones they love just because of who is in them.

I have only done my first draft voting (at least two further passes through will be done in coming days)...
Although there are plenty of images I think are good and a few I think are excellent I am surprised how many images I am rating at 5 or below. Really, a lot evoking the question "Why would you enter this into a competition of the best of an entire year?".
I know that sounds harsh but I am surprised that some of the entries were entered at all...
That said there are some images I am really enjoying. |
I entered my photo into this challenge because it was MY best of 2004 and I just wanted to see where it would end up in the challenge. I didn't enter it because I thought it was THE best of 2004. I think a decent amount of people did this. |

Landscape photos taken at what looks like noon, personal shots of people's children (why am I looking at this) etc. really make me scratch my head. I thought the same: if this is your best photo of the year, there's something wrong. Certainly at one point in time over a year a photographer with any self respect is going to set up a few carefully considered shots and process them well. Either this is not the case, or some people aren't submitting their best work. I suspect the former. A few of them looked like someone jsut ran onto the street, snapped without looking, and then uploaded.
I did give a lot of sevens and eights, but I only have seven 10s. Not a whole lot really moved me. |
I think shots of kids are wonderful if done correctly. Kids are wonderful subjects.
I tend to get tired of all the set up shots that look like they are trying to be in a magazine. Yes they are nice, but what about photographing life. |

I couldn't AGREE more! This is well worth repeating.
I also think that the reason pictures of children get voted down is because people think you are going for an "awww, how cute" vote. Which for me couldn't be farther from the truth.
Should I vote poorly on a nudity shot just because it is lacking clothes, NO. Should a shot of a child be voted down because is has a child in it, NO.

All I can say is that this definitely isn't the case for me. If an image evokes a "cute" from me I take that as a POSITIVE achievement and vote it up! It's the ones that evoke nothing more than "oh look, someone's kid" that score less highly with me.

I admit that I already came close to that, and took some time off. Now I'm back, and I've been submitting stuff that I like that has nothing to do with it being the best I could possibly to do garner votes.
I feel better for it too.. as much as I like to bitch. lol.
My shot in Best of 2004 is a very recogizably *me* shot.. (maybe not for everyone, but definitely for everyone that knows anything about me), and it's my best shot.. not just for 2004.. but *ever*.
It also happens to be of a child.. and I think that's hurt it.
You know what though? So what? When all is said and done.. *I* still have a gorgeous photograph that *is* hanging on my wall, and I've put it out there for people to see.. love or hate.
and that little virtual gif of a ribbon? (or jpg, whatever), well, they come and go. In 10 years, who'll really care? |

This is one time I didn't estimate what I thought my score would be, (figured it for higher) but in this case, I feel what I submitted is the best shot I have done to date. With 20x30" DPCPrint approval, it WILL be one of the few I care enough to put on my wall.
This one was for ME, and not for the 6.4ish it hovers around.

I also submitted my personal favorite of 2004. It was a small piece of a bigger shot; it was accidental; it defies everything that wins in the challenges; but I smile everytime I see it. It is IMHO my best shot. I love it, and I don't care that it is running mid-4s. I am at peace with who I am and what I do. I do, however, appreciate all the wonderful technical advice I get at this site. It is the VERY BEST for learning dp. Best of luck everyone, and happy 2005.

I really didn't give a whole lot of thought about how my shot would do. They said "best of 2004" and that's what I submitted. What I perceived as my best shot of last year. I have an emotional connection to my entry and have it hanging on my wall. As soon as the challenge was announced I had no second thoughts on what I was going to enter. Whether I made the right choice or not, it was based on what I thought was my best, not what I thought would do well. Good luck everyone, I'm looking forward to voting on this one. |

AMEN!!! Now, why don't we get back to the wonderful task of taking beautiful, evocative, emotive images of whatever... and share them. Personally, I'm going to do the best I can. I'm going to try to learn from those whose work I like better than my own. I'm going to listen to the ones whose commments are constructive and helpful. And, I'm going to ignore those who make mean-spirited remarks about who I am or what I do. Everyone here chooses to be here. I, for one, and I doubt I'm the only one, appreciate the effort behind each challenge. I enjoy the diversity of subjects and treatments. And, I also enjoy sunsets, flowers, cats, and kids -- and pictures of same. So if that's what you do well, bring 'em on. I'll appreciate them!!

I coulda submitted an image that probably would be around 6.5, but MY favorite is about 5.5. whatever.

I submitted an image that I felt was one of my best. It's currently at 5.8545 and I had predicted a 7.4-something. LOL... I was trying to be optimistic. :-) :-) So much for that idea! I do love the shot I submitted and have it framed. I am a bit disappointed that it's not going over as well as I had hoped. I won't love it any less, though.

"I coulda submitted an image that probably would be around 6.5, but MY favorite is about 5.5. whatever."
Gotta second that. While I submitted an unusual shot, very sharp, proper DOF for the image, colorful – but the score hovers at about the 5.2 mark. I knew it wouldn’t garner the largest score of my available images, but it’s still my personal choice as best image of 2004.
The reason I opted to submit here was to see what reaction the "gen-pop" had to my images, not so much the ribbon prospect. It's the comments that really make it worth the entry, both positive and critical.

I am new to the DPC site and submitted my first photo in the Best of 2004 challenge. It is my best digital photo of the year, and doesn't come close in quality or creativity to some of the images I voted on, but that is why I am here; to learn from people who are better at digital photography than myself.
I have a revised impression of DPC after reading the forum posts this past weekend. It is clear that there are many different motivators for participating in a challenge, and no one should be invalidated, or belittled for trying.
What is the voter "cost" to deal with images that seem amateurish? In my opinion it is only a few seconds to view a bad photo, and (if you are really kind to the photographer), a minute to comment on how the image could be improved. Seems to me that this is the mission / purpose of the DPC site to share artistry, knowledge and talent.

I also submitted a shot that I thought would score well, but it is not. But that doesn't matter because I have sold the print many times.
One thing I have learned is, judges may look at your photo and score it low because they personally do not like it, or for whatever reason, but when it comes to selling those sames prints to buyers, it really doesn't matter. Most buyers are not scoring your photo. :)
Continue to be optimistic. Its just a score. ;)

Personally I chose a photo that I really liked and was frustrated because I could not edit it the way I wanted to at the time, my skills have improved so I tried again and got something closer to what I wanted.
I also know that my wife submitted photo is her favorite, not my pick for her best but her favorite and that is what counts in the end.

*sigh*
We've invoked the wrath of the voters I think. All the talk about children in photographs earlier in this thread has coincided with a massive drop in *my* Best Of shot..
I'm suddenly all for a ban on forums discussing current challenges..
Anyone with me?! :)

A lot of mediocre but some gems as always.
As for discussing challenges during voting - tough one, one one hand it's fun, but can be bloody annoying when people are slating something you have done yourself.
Best to ignore the forum if that is the case :D
