opinions... so does the head have to be in the photo? (i.e. will a shot from the neck down get punished)
01/17/2005 03:47:44 PM · #28
@nico_blue, I don't think so, creatively don't show the face.

What about silhouttes?

I'm obliged, then, to show a wonderful example from your portfolio. I would also score this very highly:

But people have to try and interpret the challenge. The discussion here is not looking at loopholes, it seems to me to be people trying to understand what others would find acceptable.

You yourself have made your interpretaion to the challenge ... masks = no good. Many would look at that and be amazed at your interpretation as they can argue that a mask is a mask and not a face.

Everyone has different views, part of the fun of this place. I agree with you that I am often amazed at how some people try and squuze in a photo by interpreting a challenge ("Lets use this photo of my cat in the Machines challenge as his name is Digger") but in this case I thing the debate is very justified and there is no real obvious answer.

Couple comments...
First, cloning out or otherwise editing (smudge, blur, etc.) will very easily fall afoul of "removal of major elements". I'd certainly steer clear of this. BTW, I don't think the voters would think well of it anyway.
Second, I see several posts indicating that even a hint of a face will be voted down. Although I fully support the right of voters to vote as they see fit, I would encourage all to take an open mind. Very tight, restrictive interpretations of the cahllenge theme stifle creativity, the very thing that this site is about. Just my 2¢.

Edit for typo...

How about this one, or this would be a headless person on your kind of voting?

Can you do something like this? Like have the person reading a book or working in the garden or whatever, but with this effect?
01/18/2005 12:02:12 AM · #46
People;

Photograph human beings engaged in normal human activity. The restriction - they are faceless. Their faces must not be seen.

Examples shown by discraft, general, and loz don't fit that criterion. Additionally, the "headless" shot HAS a face, just in the wrong place.

There's a whole genre of "portraiture" that does not use faces, concentrates on other aspects of the body for its impact. Expect toi see lots of hand shots; they can be very expressive of the spirit and soul.

So, if I should be so unlucky as to have a leak under the sink in the kitchen, and then lucky enough to find a plumber to come and fix it, I should take his picture.

But should I get a model release?
;>)

From the "Conflict" challenge. One of my earliest, and still one of my highest rated shots.

I have several ideas for this one, just don't know which I'll be able to do yet.
