I thought about entering this for my best of 2004. I love the color of the wave with the sun shining through it. I as a bit worried that with Tsunamis being on everyone’s minds people might not view this in a positive light. The waves were real monsters this day and this wave really is as large as it looks. There is a coral reef keeping the people safe, by the time the waves made it in there were down to a foot or so, perfect for the little kids to play in.

Scott great shot and would of been a great entry but I can understand your dilemma with recent events.

yes it is a great picture, but you made the right decision in not entering it... it would have been voted low for bad taste
it is a shame that world events can discredit good photography

Personally, I wouldn't have viewed this as 'cashing in' but I bet many would - it depends on what your title would have been. It's a great snap so it should have done fairly well.

My out-take option was this:

My outtake - wonder how it would have done, considering the one I chose is doing far worse then I'd expected/hoped.

Maybe we should do an outtake challenge, all the ones here look pretty good. Just voted on little over half of the entries, only couple of 4's nothing lower, should be a high scoring challenge. I didnt enter, waited to long and we got hit with a ice storm today, took a very long time to get home. Any way, this would've been the shot I had entered.

Here's one I like

and I think that maybe I should have entered this one

Gorgeous. I love this one.

I would have liked to enter either

or

but I ended up going with something more traditional.

I would have entered it. Why is it bad taste to show a picture of a wave? My newpapers have been full of the damage done by a wave for almost four weeeks now.

Wow, Colda - the second one is wonderful!

I would have scored it a 10!

Stephanie
Always impressed and humbled by you.

Thanks for the compliments *blush*

My entry is currently 5.5490, not bad but wish I'd entered the other one.

C'est la vie

I would've given you a 10 without even considering it.

This was going to be my entry ... until I came to resize it and found I had to use 50% jpeg compression :-/

I wasn't sure with this one...

Thought of these...flowers seem to have too large of a contingent of those who dislike them just because. The second was entered until the last minute and I changed it. Hope I made the right decision.

voters would have killed me for the tilt!
01/16/2005 09:14:06 AM · #19
The tilt is what gives it its charm! Would have been better than your submission!! : )

I would probably have given it a 9. But perhaps a glass of brandy in his hand might have told the viewer more about the tilt.

From another thread:

I was torn between 4 different shots for my best of, I settled on one and looking back now I should have choose another, but alas I couldn't find the originals on two of them so I couldn't enter those. They were:

Lynnelle and Ben Cantering

And

Ben ready to go home

and

James

None of which are even remotely tied into what I did enter. I think I should have entered James, but alas, hindsite is 20/20

Those were my "out takes"

One of these two would have been my second choice, or perhaps should have been my first choice:

01/16/2005 10:53:15 AM · #24
Two of the most successful of my non challenge shots are

However, they`ve been chosen as favourites so often that I thought it wouldn`t be right to submit them.

These two were the losers in my final choice..in fact I submitted "Full cycle" then withdrew it for another.

I found it very difficult to decide on my submission for this challenge..I think I would have preferred if the wording had been specific and said submit the most popular non challenge pic in your portfolio (based on the number of viewings and how often it had been chosen as a favourite)...then the choice would have been made for me.

Here's one of my alternates. Probably would have done better than my submission, which is not to the "tastes" of DPC:

Details:

This is processed to a bit of extreme using a DPC legal action called "Soft Blur Red" (red channel) from an action called "BillM DPR ver 07.atn" from the "DPReview Retouching Forum Action Collection", with some further contrast enhancement to emphasize the sparkle in the ice. This cause part of the scene to move towards blow out; I have versions where I controlled that, but for whatever reasons, aesthetically, I liked this best. Let me know what you think. (That's why I called this version Extreme)

The scene is from Stowe Vt, on a path near Mt. Mansfield.
