I have gone walking downtown for the last three days between 5 and 8pm.. and it's so beautiful, the light through the trees, on the buildings, etc. A very pretty city... and yet.. I can't seem to capture that!! I still use my camera on automatic.. I *really* need to learn manual. Anybody care to share some tips on learning? I need to find my book on my camera as well (moved recently, can't find a thing!)

augh. I have about 20-30 shots.. and maybe 2 I can use. And they suck pretty badly.. oh well. I shall learn eventually! Anyone else in this position/was in this position (and perhaps can give some good advice?)

Jenguin, TIME, my tip is that just try one different setting per challenge. By the time u know it uve mastered your camera. Dont rush into all the settings.

Does anyone know if Sony has something like this. I got my camera about 18 months ago, looked at the manual, didn't understand it, and did who knows what with it. Mind you , I have the box it came, the receipt, all the sales junk in the box, every piece of confounded paper that could possibly be related -- except the manual.

Jenguin, what helped me is that I photo'd a still life. As I did so, I wrote down the settings used for each image. (My camera doesn't export EXIF data). I then printed each one out - I actually have a program that allows to print many px of the same size (or even multi sizes) on the same sheet at the same time with a journal area under each frame where I put the info I had written down. I compared each of the settings with the effect on the same still life photo'd at the same conditions (is this making sense? It is 1:15 AM here!) at the same time, and this taught me quickly (in relative terms!) what to expect when I need to make a shot quickly before losing the moment. Now, of course, this doesn't always work, as I get excited and just rattle off a bunch of shots sometimes! :-) Hope this idea helps.

That's definitely good advice... playing with it makes the information you read come together more quickly..

if you are taking pictures in low light, use a tripod.

I got lucky with my camera in low light this evening.. I managed to hold still for a couple of 1/4" exposures... i proped myself up against a pole for a little added steadiness...

Practice, Practice, Practice. Since joining this site I''ve been running round like an headless chicken snapping anything that moves. I have started playing with the limited settings of my camera so that I can compare images later. Taking notes on each picture is a great idea especially if you take multiple images of the same shot. You can then compare shots and make a note of which one works best for each particular situation. The bonus of course is that the only cost incurred using a Digital is Time. Have fun and keep snapping :-)

PS: Would really appreciate it if some of you would have a look at an image I just created on PS7. I''m new to it and would welcome any comments on how to improve it. Its in My Gallery under "Unusual/Forgive Me Father". Thnx ;-)

Dogman,

I'm no expert myself and personally use Corel PhotoPaint10, but it looks great to me. I've been using Corel for about 3yrs and self taught (and with others' photos). So far, I take my pictures and experiment with each of the different effects in Corel (Corel & PS are almost the same-just personal preference). My first stab at it came out a little creepy to some-I like it, but of course it started out as a pic of my cat (I know everyone here just loves those pet photos haha). Mine is under Misc.

Anyway, I agree that it takes PRACTICE and lots of it. And yes, it can be frustrating. I have also been running around taking photos, just to take photos and compare the settings for each.

Good luck with this week's challenge, I'm going out tonight to take more.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments! I'm going to do as you guys say, little by little. I have a still life I need to set up to paint soon, so maybe I'll fiddle with that a little bit.

Thanks for the encouraging words! :)

th ebest way to learn your camera is the same as the best way to learn how to rollerblade: don't take them off for a week!

but there are definitely TWO things that can accelerate the process:

FASTEST: A) hang around with someone who knows what they're doing while they're doing it and have them explain why they did what they did

SECOND FASTEST: B) read. there are TONS of excellent resources on the net that can get you up to speed really quick. try Good Site for Photograhy Tips]. This one is good. There are many more.

Good luck!

Thanks! I have the same camera you do, and the PDF is a lot easier to read (and find!) than the printed one.
