You know XP and wireless connections, please ignore all the @@$(*@&, please help, help, help!!!!!
Argghgggghh and Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh and Urggghhhhhhhhhhh and #R$&)(@*$*&@^$(&*_!$*($&&*@^$&@^$&^!%$^%!%^#$%& Microsoft!
And some more of that.
Why oh why!? My o my!
Ok down to business.
I've got this 'old', not supported anymore 802.11b (b as in we will not upgrade it because the memory of the devices are too small) wireless router. It worked fine with Windows 98SE wireless cards and Windows XP Home 0 (128bit WEP key).
But now I have my laptop upgraded to XP SP2 and suddenly my PCMCIA wireless card will not connect under WEP encryption anymore because it has a WPA encryption bug (The network is visable, oh yes, but connection my ***). I will deinstall XP SP2 tomorrow right away.
One of my XP SP1 pc's with a USB wireless device only connects after I plug out and plug in the USB connector. It works with WEP, hooray!
My new desktop PC with XP2 as default OS needs the WEP key typed in after every restart with several hours in between. That is a 27 digit code! It took me hours to get it connected at all and if I install Norton internet security 2005 it will not connect at all (I've got another scanner running now).
The last Win98SE machine still connects fine, WEP enabled.
Why did it work without problems with Windows XP 0, funky with SP1 and troublesome to not at all with SP2. This sucks!
Do you know what the solution was that MS gave me? Update your hardware! Kerching, that's one new PCMCIA card, three new WPA-capable USB Wireless LAN devices, one WPA-capable router and one new pc with XP SP2. Microsoft, you suck! (but I already knew that)
The only lightpoint here is that Photoshop 6 works with XP SP2, Nikon Capture Works and all my cameras, scanners and printers connect.
I had a great day behind the screen, how was yours?
Whoohahahahaha, please, pass me that bottle of Four Roses....
And some more Argghhhhhhhhhhh!

Have you updated the firmware in your access point, and updated your cards to the latest drivers?
99% of the times, these problems are a driver/firmware issue, not an OS issue.

It was one of the first routers/access points so the manufacturer does not support it anymore. The problem is that the router does not have enough memory for a WPA capable firmware (it would solve the problem). :(

Sounds like your problem is the access-point manufacturer.
There is always the option of running a non-secure network, but I don't recommend it. Failing that, wireless-B access points can be had very cheaply (sometimes as low as $10 after rebate if you can afford to be patient).

Some things just become obsolete. Sorry. But with all the money you have invested in all your other stuff, it doesn't seem to me that you should be ranting that a company has progressed beyond what you consider worth spending your money on. I do understand your frustration to a point. |

You can get an 802.11g router and PCMCIA card from TirgerDirect for like $100. Then you wouldn't have to ^*&^($*(*&*^ anymore. Upgrade your router.

I just think that is stupid that support of not so old technologies has stopped on the same OS I started with. You get XP 0 in a Win98 environment and everything works fine. But just by upgrading your OS suddenly the whole hardware environment needs to be replaced. That sucks! And what sucks evene more is that the Win98 machine (can't take XP) cannot work with the WPA encryption.
That means that I need new WPA gear but also that I need to plug-in and setup the old router as a child (english is not my native language and I am not at home with much of the tech lingo) of the WPA router and pray that it will all work.
I'll get it sorted, no problem. I just hate installing new stuff because there is always something that goes wrong. We need to replace the waterpipe-structure in our house anyway, I think I'll just use the old pipes to get some cables trough and ditch the whole wireless crap. :)

In computer terms, 6-year-old technology is pretty old. And in any case, it's the access-point manufacturer that's responsible to support the hardware they sell. The drivers that Microsoft includes with their OS are provided by the hardware manufacturers and cerified by Microsoft. If the manufacturer doesn't write and submit a driver, Microsoft can't include it.
If the manufacturer is no longer supporting the product, then it is end-of-life and Microsoft should not commit to supporting it. They're not in the business of supporting 3rd-party hardware.

When's the last time you bought a box with a Pentuim chip in it from Microsoft? The ONLY thing they do is support 3rd-party hardware ... they're just choosy abou who they'll support. |

Been where you are now at various point along the way.
I don't envy you...
I got a scanner after i bought new hardware cause the new box had only PCI slots. My old scsi card would not be usable, so i got a new USB scanner. A year later i upgraded to XP Pro (from 98) and the scanner folks had no drivers out. This was a YEAR after XP was released (i waited on purpose), XP SP1 actually is what i installed. After a bit of work and waiting, i found drivers that would work - the buttons on my scanner don't work, and the scanning software, the 'LE' crap, would not work. So i had to buy $100 worth of software (good stuff...but it should not be necessary).
Got a nother new puter last year..usb 2.0. got a usb 2.0 card reader...it cannot be plugged in at the same time as the scanner or the scanner won't work...
Never had much luck with using the USB interace with either fuji camera. Card reader works though.
My 4 year old linksys WAP/Router (not g, must be b) works with XP SP2 in a hard wired config. I rarely use my old wireless card (P1 100 laptop) so i cannot vouch for it working.
