Not posting this thread to complain first offâ€Â¦I’ve learned that gets you nothing anyways, and makes everyone else think you are a poor looser. I wanted to know what was wrong with it, was it not obvious enough for the challenge? Would it have done better if I had chosen the direct opposite, a yellow background with a mustard bottle spelling out Yellow in ketchup? Is it a boring shot, flat, uninteresting? Just wondering what some more people thought about it. I didn’t receive any negative comments on it, just curious what they might be if people have them.

i didn't see this one myself (since i didn't get a chance to do anything but skim the entries), but at first glance the red is a little harsh on the eyes - maybe a little too red (or maybe it's just my eyes.. ack!). i think perhaps the contrast between the bright red and the bright yellow makes for an unpleasing combination, but i'm not sure. i do really like the concept, and the technical aspect seems okay as well. maybe more space so that the words aren't up against the edges of the photo? not sure - just providing some possible ideas.

Hey, at least you're in the top half! I gave it a "6" I thought it was clever and decently taken. I had two problems: the highlights were a bit too glaring for me, and the red bottle didn't fit well with the background. Had you done a yellow bottle, maybe it would have more balance. Overall, while this concept is amusing, I probably would only have given it a "7" or "8" if I was really generous. It just lacks a certain appeal I want. (naked women, obviously! :P ) But, I thought it was nice. |

Thank you, even though I want to look at my picture and say it is great, those are good sugestions to why it didn't do as well. Like I said I'm not complaining just trying to fill in the hole...but thanks vontom for the 6, sorry for no naked women, that and puppy dogs always seems to do very well.

The shot to me is lacking a little quality but is a good concept.
The score it reached is probably what it deserved and you should be happy with that let's face it, this shot was never going to win a ribbon. |

Man...why does everyone think when someone posts a thread they are unhappy with the score. I have nothing wrong with where I placed...would I have liked to place higher, Yes...do I now sit back and understand my score, Yes. I just didn't get any feedback to why, that's all. I'm trying to get better and it's hard when you get a 5, average shot, with no comments and want to know how it could have been a 6 or higher. To be honest I had very poor conditions to take the shot, so I think what I came out with was good considering, but definitely think I could have done better if I had more time and the things to make it work. Again...don't care about the score, just was wondering what was wrong, and I think I have a good idea now from the few people who have replied...thank you, and goodnight.

I know what you mean, too many threads complaining about only coming in the top third percentile, it's kinda silly. If you get a 3, yeah theres a right to complain but a -6 is good on this site.
It's worse when they say 'I got 4 2's and 5 3's, how?????'

I think the background is to red. A lighter(white) background would have increased the color contrast of the yellow and red. I didn't vote, but did see it when I looked at the thumbs and did look at the opened picture.
I think someone might have left you a hint in the comments. The title really annoyed me. People say titles don't matter, but I know I was left with a negative feeling of the picture because of the title. |

Interesting...I was one day late, but I was going to photograph a banana with sharp lighting against a black background and convert it to black and white..."The Shape of Yellow" |

Just put this on your entry:
Actually I think this is technically done well. The highlights are just a tad blown out, but just a tad. The red is fine and the contrast settings are good because you can see definition between the red background and the red bottle. I think it is a funny take on the challenge. I would have given it a 6 or 7.
A lot of the voters at DPC anymore seem to have tunnel vision when it comes to voting and have no sense of humor. Maybe if your photo would have had a yellow background, yellow bottle, with yellow letters spelling "yellow", people would have understood how it met the challenge and scored it a bit higher. Maybe... :-)

That would have been something different. The shape and the words would go well together. The title of this picture doesn't give the viewer any credit, it's like a the photographer is telling lies where your title tells the viewer to link the color to the shape. Does that make any sense? Anyway, that is just my opinion about it. I am not trying to be hurtful at all. |

I think that would have been a great interpretation of the challenge. You should take that picture and post it in the forums to see how people would react. I am inclined to score above 5 based on the interpretation and title. Obviously the execution and resulting image would impact the final score. Good concept.

I will disagree, I think the title made the picture, here. Sure, a yellow bottle pouring yellow liquid ona yellow background spelling the word yellow would have fit the challenge, it wouldn't have been clever. The title conjured up images of our over-commercialized, hyper-trendy society (red is the new black, or green is the new orange) and some very funny movies (e.g. josie and the pussycats). Without that connection, It was just an all-right picture. |

I chose this idea because it said the COLOR yellow had to have an impact. To me the yellow stands out more with the red, and did not want to spell out yellow or use it in the title, I figured that would be to obviouse and wanted a little bit of thought to happen. I also thought the title was necessary for the idea of the photo. Thought it was different...I try my hardest to not take a photo that others might do. In the past I have failed at this I know...but I do honestly try and take unique pictures that the viewer might not have seen before in the challenge, or better yet ever. I thank you all for the comments that I have recieved now. This was a photo you liked or you hated...I liked it.

To answer your specific questions: I think your entry was obvious enough for the challenge, and I don't think the direct opposite configuation would have gotten a better score from me. It's not the most exciting shot, but certainly cannot be called boring due to its overall cleverness. I gave you a 6 because it met the challenge, was technically sound, and was an original idea with intellectual interest. I've given some thought as to what could have been differently done to possibly produce a higher score. I can only speak for myself here, but I thought the visual interest could have been pumped up a bit if the lettering was fancier - a few swoops and swirls. What I'm thinking of is akin to the "Happy Birthday" in cursive writing on a birthday cake.
Another approach might have been to include an element in the shot to show a change from the "old red" to the "new red" -- something to help the viewer resolve the apparent dissonance between the contrasting colors. I've tried to think of an example all day, but the best I could come up with was if the background was a red transparency laid over an appropriate page of a fashion magazine. Say, the title page of Vogue. Or if there had been some of the word "red" actually written in ketchup (just the beginning of "R") with the yellow mustard taking over the rest of the word.
Either of those two things would have resulted in no less than one extra point each. Hope this helps.... |
