I really think most people are getting defensive PMs when they post nasty comments. There is a polite way to tell someone their work sucks. I think a lot of people like being rude when they can hide behind a screen name. That same person would never speak like that, if they had to say it in person. If you say you will give a 1 for someone PMing you, I can tell from that you probably posted something really nasty.

I'm hoping that when your writing switched from "a person" to "you" it was just an accident, and not an implication on my comments, because as I posted, my record is open for review and I believe I do a pretty good job of staying constructive. The user in question is someone entirely different as I pretty much only give "1" for a lens cap shot, and never change my votes based on PMs.

I agree that a nasty comment is often (unfortunately) responded to in kind, but my suggestion is to not bother and move on in that case. I've received my share of comments that I deem less than insightful, but it's a waste of time to aknowledge inappropriate comments so I just ignore them rather than respond.

Hopefully when you've been here for a while longer you'll still think that people don't get defensive about constructive criticism. My experience has been otherwise. I'm certainly not saying that's how it always is, just that it's something I've seen. I always enjoy a good conversation with well thought out points about an image, I just don't like defensive PMs which make it obvious someone didn't consider my criticism with the same energy I studied their work.

Life goes on, and I continue to enjoy this site well beyond the membership fee. At this point I'm ready to simply clear my name from any implied ambiguity of wrongdoing and move along. Just got the latest issue of National Geo in the mail, so I'm going to find some new inspiration and click my shutter for a while instead of the keyboard.

I have never read any of your comments, and was not speaking about you, when I said "you". :-)

For my 2c worth I appreciate each and all comments on my images. I have only Pm'd when a specific question has been aked. ie "How much fill flash did you use" I wsill answer to those but leave all others until after the event.

I welcome any critique or opinion on my photos, too, it is what we want to achieve, a response on our art, isn't it?

And if I am asked a question, I will reply to it.

And if I have been given useful advise, I'd like that person to know that their time giving me advise was not wasted.

I do however like the idea that the identity of the commentor gets revealed after the challenge.

Photography is an art and should get people to express their feelings in creating it and commenting on it, don't you think?

I understand your objections, but I must admit ,personally, in doing so some have upped their original score - they didn't think my photo represented the theme, until I pointed out how it related. Some folks are linear thinkers, but get the point once they 'see' it. But I normally don't comment -except once when someone said my photo was awful, and why did I bother to submit it since it would never win. - I scored the highest I had ever scored in that challenge, ironically

I am making comments on the photos in the B&W challenge, and in response, people are giving me explanations through PM.

Don't do it! Stay Anonymous!

I will give anyone a automatic "ONE" for this, no matter how good the photo is. Save your comments for after the challenge.
