I think the core issue here is the intent of the person that PMs you. If it is as people say to explain something that you have commented on then it should wait till after voting.
And if it is as I suspect to influence your voting it should not be allowed so therefore why PM about a comment at all while voting is in progress??.

Why can't that wait until the challenge is over?

First of all by that comment, you are letting them know that you value their opinion. Secondly, they have NO idea which photo is yours!

Thanks -- I hope your photos score a little better than mine!

It's acceptable practice in that those are the rules of the site at this time, which I'm supposed to enforce and clarify. Sending a PM is allowed. That doesn't mean it's a good idea, but it also seems undeserving of any more "punishment" than a polite reply to the effect that "I prefer to maintain complete anonymity during the voting, and so I am disregarding your recent message."

I have occassionally responded to a comment during the voting when the person specifically asked for some information or clarification. Otherwise I have no problem waiting until the challenge is over to respond, except I almost always forget to.

"Nasty" PMs are a different matter -- they may not be allowed at all, depending on their level of nastiness. But those situations are to be handled by reporting the user for a violation of site TOS and appropriate disciplinary action -- changing a vote on their photo is not right. But in no case can I support penalizing a user just for sending a message.

Paul. I think each voter gets to set up their own "rules" for voting. Some do it in a methodical manner, some rate on personal experience and feelings, some rate the quality above the content, and some match the picture against whatever they envision the challenge should be and give scores of 1 if that idea isn't matched. How can you tell anyone how they should vote? If that is a consistant part of their system, who is to say it's wrong?

If anyone wants to PM me to answer my comments left during a challenge, you are most welcome to do so! These days there are 400+ photos to vote on and comment on, I might have overlooked something in a picture so you are most welcome to pm me. Most people spend 5 to 10 seconds (if that!) on a photo and am sure would see more and perhaps appreciate more what the photographer intended to communicate if they spent more than those 5 seconds to look at a photo.

All this to say that I welcome all pm's on my comments, this is a site to learn stuff from and I for one do not pretend to know it all and welcome being corrected when I'm wrong.

Well put there doctornick.

Difficult though if people need to worry about the "if I PM and say something the person might change their score and give me a 1" .... which thankfully seems to be a tiny minority or 1.

Why not just make comments anonymous till after the rounds end as well? That'd solve this pretty easily.
11/19/2004 12:12:43 AM · #84
If an image requires explanation (aside from the title) to get its point across, it's just not a very good image.

FWIW, I have received angry PM's about some of my comments and have either deleted the comments or just changed them to "..."

A poll has been created on whether to make comments anonymous during voting.

That has its own set of problems. Comments used to be anonymous in the early days of the site and we had some pretty abusive comments at the time.

That said, a poll has been opened up for public voting... please do so!

In my opinion people who PM when comments are made are trying to influence the voter. This i feel is not in the spirit of competition or this site.

Im sorry if this sounds like i'm an idiot but ive spent around 30 minutes trying to find the messages link. if somebody sent you a private message, how can you read it? ive sent one to myself just to try and see if theres a note or something. cant find it though

Maybe this is a crazy idea- I don't know much about computer programming- but would it be possible to have an option for the commentor to have their comment be anonymous during voting, thus allowing those who welcome PMs and response to maintain that, while those who prefer a "double-blind" system can utilize that?

The private message gets sent to your email address - the one you filled in when you signed up to dpc - check your email , or u gave a fake address!

ps you can change your email address - My Home - My Preference and change your email address there
11/19/2004 01:47:08 AM · #95
Oh OK! thanks. I thought they were two separate links.

My thought exactly!

I quite like to recieve messages from comments that I make, and in the case of misunderstandings on my part (due to my ignorance of a subject) then I am not ashamed to say that I return to amend the score.

DPC is not life and death, take it easy, I'd rather have some fun on here than stress, I have enough of that in real life.
