I understand that you don't want some poop head crapping all over everyone's pictures, but at the same time, if someone is just a hard ass when it comes to voting, neglecting those votes is just as bad. I just returned to the site after being gone for almost a year, the reason I left was that I got tired of everything looking the same. I think it is important to get new view points into the compotitions to change the look of all the winners to something new.

And yet you give an average of 1.5 points per photo higher than Xian. Seriously what does it say to you when someone averages giving a 3 or 2.9 or 3.4 or something? You give a 4.9. If 5 was average, you're RIGHT on it. So however hard you thought you were voting, you weren't, really.

:)

Just because I have an average vote 1.5 points higher than Xian makes me more right than him. I just feel that he should be entitled to his position as well.

He's entitled to it, but D&L don't count it. They think it degrades the quality of the votes received if someone gives out 80% 1-3 and 20% 4-9 without ever giving a 10. They designed the site, they designed the scale. If they wanted it to be 1-5, it would be 1-5, with 5 being best. It's not. If you abuse the scale, meaning using it in a way that was not intended, your votes will not count. He is entitled to vote however he wishes. However, this may be the end result.

He is entitled to his position, it just doesn't "count"... and he now knows how to change that. No one has taken his position away from him.

He is also entitled to have people read his comments and check them "useful" or not.

He is also entitled to make whatever he wants of his time, experience and efforts. Personally, I wouldn't waste my time looking at a mass of pictures I thought I could learn nothing from, giving them low scores and less than helpful comments.

He is also entitled to decide if his role here is student, teacher or both and to act accordingly. His choice. No one made him act the way he acts and no one but he can change that.

(And no, I never did tell him how he should vote--he just assumed that. And you know what they say about people who "assume"...)

No. Got that from my H.S. Geometry teacher on the first day of class as he introduced us to the "Wonderful World of Theorems"....hated the teacher, never forgot the subject.

I think the bottom line is that since, in theory, someone could sign up for a large number of basic accounts using different email addresses, there is the potential for people to inflate their own photographs and diminish the score on others. Why people would do this- who knows, I just hope that the majority of people out there don't base their self-worth on how the photo they entered did on dpchallenge.

Just out of curiousity, I would be interested to see how many of the voting patterns caught by the system were from basic memberships, and how many were from paid memberships. I think that could be a useful number for those who are currently opposed to the filtering system (myself not included).

Just my 2 cents.

Did we over rate your pictures? What score would you give yourself? I̢۪m not trying to be rude but that̢۪s one of the reasons votes get booted [to many of the same vote in one challenge].
I would love to here how you rate photographs. What is a 1 to you, what is a 2 to you, what is a 3 to you, etc? Maybe it would help us understand a little better.

No I don't think my images are "twice" (where did that come from?) as good as anyone elses. And there are some very talented people that submit to the challenges. I'd give my preying mantis a 7 and my fly (which I submitted as a goof on the theme) a 6. At least they were in focus!!!! So many hundreds of entries in both those challenges were out of focus! I rate technical acievment pretty high. On the other hand meeting the challenge and good composition is also important to me. I would NEVER submit an out of focus picture (unless it was some artistic effect, of course).

these are 1s:

//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=119351
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=119647
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=119891

//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=118272
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=118217

I could go on and on. Read my comments on those. Does anyone really disagree with me here? Poorly composed, no focus, or subjects that didn't even come close to meeting the challange.

Just quoted so i would not have to cut an paste 10 times.

On 4 of the 10 I did vote 1. one 2. and 4 threes, and one 4 (the plane).
I do vote low, averaging about a 4. I have never had a vote not count. If somebody tries to take a good photo, I reward them with a high score. On average for me, >15% of the photos fall in a 7-10 range, 35% fall in the 6-4 range, and 45% fall in the 4-3 range, and >5% in the 2-1 range. Sometimes I wonder why some people submit a photo, but that is up to them, not me (if they like ridicule then so be it). If I give a between a 3 and a 1 I do comment on why and I state what vote I gave. It took me some time to get a voting style that i like. I give 0 to 3 points in three categories; Aesthetics, Quality, and Challenge/Title integration. If they get 8, 9 points, or i just like the image I give them an extra point. Someone suggested once using the ABCDF system with an A=10 B=9-7 C=7-5 D=4-3 F=2-1, then just treat the images as if you had to grade a class assignment. You know who tries and who did not study, and grade accordingly.

Hope this helps break some of the monotony in this forum.

Adam

When you look at each photograph after the challenge is over it shows how many 1,2,3,4,etc. were given to that picture in the form of a graph. I would like to see this site incorporate a way anyone could click on and vote number graph and it would show the list of users that voted that score. EXAMPLE: if a picture received 10 –8’s, you could click on the 8 graph bar and it would send you to a page that would list the ten users that voted the photograph an 8. And you could do this on all votes 1-10 and on any picture, not just your own.

Vote Stats update either once or twice a week at midnight EST. You may just need to give it a day or two.

I would have to disagree with that. Anonymity is there to protect voters from personal attacks, etc. Never underestimate the immaturity of the people (paraphrased) ;-)

What I would like to see is your personal voting statistics. A chart that would display how many of each score you gave out. So you can see a graph based curve of your voting pattern.
