On the first of November in Poland we visit cementaries. I found one beautiful statue there and I can't decide which shot is better. I also can't decide whether it looks better in colour or B&W. Colour gives nice autumn atmosphere to it, softens it a bit, while B&W makes it really sad. No idea, any help?

I like the first one in B&W the best. The colour doesn't give the right atmosphere in my opinion. But the B&W seems a bit harsh.
If you have PS or other you might like to try Duotone ot Tritone to soften it a little but without the full colour range.

I'm in Europe, so it's time to go to bed here.
Maybe somebody else from the other end of the world would like to comment?
Good night ;)

I also like the Black & White in the 1st set. Colour, I think takes away from these pictures, B&W works better here. Also, I think if it wasn't so gloomy when you were taking these pictures (looks like it was very overcast with no sign of the sun), these would really be great pictures.
Great job.
PS: I remember Nov 1st, I think it was called "Dzien Zmarlych". That was a while ago, now all we have here is Halloween instead. |

All are rather documentary in style. What part of the statue interests you the most? When you determine that, focus on that part of it :)

Actually, I loike the color shot in the top set. I agree that the black and white is to harsh, but I would be curious to see what sepia looked like.
Some close up work may be interesting as well, Jim. |

For me the B&W is better in both cases. The colour distracts from what is the point of this picture I think. I find myself looking down to the stronger coloured objects below and not at the statue.

Thank you all for your comments. I have PS since years and I always had problem with Duotones. Funny isn't it? Now, thanks to moodville tutorial I may finally do it.
I'll try it on the first picture.
The problem with focus on the particular part of the statue is I like the right side of the statue more (the hair, the beautiful profile, the wing) but somebody destroyed one hand and it disturbs me. So I tried to do it en face more so the lack of hand won't be so visible, but the second shot got far less interesting details.
PS November 1st is called "Dzien Wszystkich Swietych" ("All Saints Day"), but everybody calls it "Dzien Zmarlych" ("Day of the Deceased"). Halloween is not very popular in Poland but this year I've heard for the first time about children asking around for sweets. November 1st tradition is very strong in Poland. I think it needs more than one generation to be replaced with Haloween.
