Hi. I'd be more than happy to join this. I got my 10D this spring and traveled quite a bit with it around Iceland last summer and got some very nice shots. Might even upload some of them soon, esp if you ask my nicely.

Must stops (in no particular order):
1) The glacial lagoon at Jökulsárlón á Breiðamerkusandi.
2) Lake Mývatn area (pref. 1-3 days)
3) The Snæfellsnes peninsula
4) The mountain massive of Eyjafjöll and surroundings
5) The riftzone at Þingvellir
6) All the rest of Iceland :)

if time allows:
- The Vestfirðir area (Western fjords)
- The central highlands

For all of this (exept the central highlands) 4x4 is NOT necessary, but WILL LIMIT a bit what is do-able.

Camping is the cheapest way, but sleepingbag acc. is also an option. There are many hotels around and B&B's run by local farmers. Camping is the most flexible way, but also the riskiest esp with regards to weather. I think a very loose and flexible plan is the best, just trust us locals to find interesting (and dry) spots.

I'm a tourguide here, so I could possibly arrange for a big AWD truck with a lot of space for equipment (maybe 30-40 seater for 15-20 people). I'd guess the cost of that (possibly with a driver) will be less than 3-4 4x4 jeeps and we could get into all the same areas. Kitchen trailer optional.

For people (like myself) interested in birding Mývatn is a must and so are the Western fjords.

Apparently we must do a photostop at Grótta in Seltjarnarnes, since a lot of challenge entries have been from there recently:

Edit: added a few Grótta photos and a few suspected Grótta photos

I highly recomend Vestfirdir. The litle I´ve seen of it is just amazing (Latrabjarg, Arnarfjordur and more).

It's been a while since I looked at this thread...what were the dates that most people were planning on and for what length of time?

Could somebody please summarize who's in and when, etc?

Wow. Very jealous. 2005 trip for me has been set for Tunisia, Africa (which will be very exciting in itself, but lacking 20 or so dpc companions.)

You guys are forgetting the Icelandic women!
Plenty of beautiful models.

A few Icelandic landscapes from my portfolio:
Kárahnjúkar
Midnight sun
The glacial lagoon at Jökulsárlón (not a good photo though)

Just one observation:
Temperature difference between June/July/August is not that much, July being the warmest, but not by a large margin. (see also info from the Icelandic meterological office).
But in July will be far more tourists here, so in June there will be less traffic, less demand on accommedation, fewer people ruining landscapes by walking into them :) etc
So I'd suggest June 15th to 25th. June 17th is a national holliday, our Idenpendence day, so a lot of festivities and photo options. Could cost a hangover the next day :)
The same applies for late August-early September

Edit:
Yes, and BTW the longest day of the year is around June 21st, and if we're in N Iceland at that point we'll get the true midnight sun.

You celebrate independence day in June AND August? Wow. :-)

I actually second going in June if there will be less tourists. There was a lot of tourists in Iceland 1 week ago, I'm sure there will be more in July. :-)

No, but hangovers are common in both months :)

I totally want to go, but that's not a week that my husband is free. He's a student, and he won't be out of Summer Term (year round college) until the mid-end of August :( I even have friends in Iceland too!!!

Man, I wish I could go! I wish you all the best and hope you all have a great time! Perhaps we can plan a trip for 2006 sometime in late Aug early Sept or even early May. I don't expect people to vacation around me, but just incase you haven't picked a date for your 2006 trip yet! :)

I'm 100% there, however, I'm gonna be a little selfish and request this trip happens around July 20th (my birtday), that way I can kill 2 birds with one stone. I really really wanna do this during my birthday, but I'm going regardless of the date.

Nope. There will be more in July. Trust me, I know what I'm doing! :)
Usually the main tourist season starts about 3rd week of June, depending on a lot of other factors like: Euro/World Cups in Football (know to you 'mericans as Soccer), solar/lunar eclipses, terrorists, alien abductions and other.
July is the busiest month, and into the first two weeks of august.

BTW doctornick I think I sent you a PM to put me onto the list, but I haven't seen any reply. Did you get it?
