Blurred Interlude by jjbeguinComment: JJ, I tried, I truly tried, but I could not help but add this to my favorites. I strive to be half the photographer that you are. If we weren't half a world apart, I would beg you to allow me to follow you around so that I could attempt to get into the mind of a true master.
Humbly yours,

Outcast by L1Comment: Sorry I haven't commented sooner hon, but I've been workin' through some issues. ;-) This is an awesome shot. Composition is spot on. Love the focus or I should say love the fact that the children in the background are perfectly unfocused. Love the bluish tonality. It makes the shot 'feel' sad. Very emotional.
You have hit on one of my favorite forms of post processing treatment. The duo- tri- quad-tone is such a powerful tool. Just by adjusting the tonality of a shot you can give it so many different feelings. If you changed this one redish for example you could change the feeling from one of sadness to one of rage. Try it!
I'm so glad to see that you have another ribbon in your collection. Gotta do some catchin' up now.
Yours always
TC
PS: Didn't vote or comment on this challenge. The subject matter is not one that appeals to me. I gotta queesy stomach... ;-) Message edited by author 2005-02-19 22:47:26. |

No Outletby taterbugComment: Dude, time for my two cents worth. Think ya shoulda cropped down quite a bit if this was really the angle ya liked the best. We know it's a street sign and didn't have to be hit over the head with it. I really liked the different angled shot that had much less of the no parkin' sign in it. I know the background wasn't as nice, but with the less cluttered foreground, a tighter crop and a sweet camera like mine, think ya woulda did a bit better. Hey, remind me to punch ya back Fokker!
TC
Edited because I forgot that Fokker is a proper like noun and is suposed to be capitalized... Message edited by author 2005-02-09 01:13:54. |

Three at Night by TooCoolComment: OMG I can't believe I finally did it! Thank you all for voting on it. Couple of quick notes:
First off Imagineer. What you are seeing is not the polution coming out of the stack. It is steam. The particulates that come out of the stacks are invisible most of the time. Not to say that there aren't bad things coming out, just most of the time you can't see them. When the temps drop below 20 degrees F. a wonderful thing happens. You get the most awesome steam formations coming out of them!
BradP. I didn't do much to the shot at all. Simple levels and curves to make the sky dark again. Boosted the red saturation a little to make the lights pop (also turned the steam a little yellowish but had to live with it with the time I had to process it.) Sharpend slightly, cropped, resized sharpened again to taste. That's all.
Personal note: I'm truly amazed that this shot scored as high as it did. I took this shot for myself with the challenge theme in mind. The Board of Water and Light towers (winkin' blinkin' and nod) are the tallest things in boring old Lansing MI and look really cool at night when it's colder then ______ out. I don't really understand why it did so well. Not that I'm complaining! Guess I gotta stand by my oft forgotten rule of thumb. Shoot for yourself and fit it into the challenge when it applies.
Thanks again to all.

Composition in 3sby atsxusComment: Sorry... I don't believe that this effect should be legal in the competitions and must vote to discourage it's use...
TC
Edited to add actual critique: I'm not sure why you chose to use the tryptych style in this image. There really is no connection to the challenge theme except that you have divided the shot into three sections. You have what is essentially an average landscape type of shot which incorporates some urban elements. By adding the horizontal bars you have not added anything to the composition. If anything you have divided the shot into a very nice panoramic style shot (top), a below average (spelled boring) urban shot (bottom), and a very bland landscape in the middle. You really didn't add any impact or pop to the shot... |

Motion work in 3-jawby bicrayComment: Except for your title, I don't see a relationship to the challenge topic. I'm assuming it's there, just a little essoteric for this viewing audience...

3 Applesby rudacbComment: Nice composition. You have three hot spots. Moving your light to the sides and diffusing it more would help with this and give it much more depth. THis is needed in a still life shot such as this. Did you spray the apples with water? It almost looks like they have wierd growths or something on them. This is a great subject for lighting study. Keep workin on it. You almost got it.
