This is one of those photos that causes me to stop and think. I like that. At first, I thought the focus should be on the boy but the longer I look at it, the more I realize that you were right in keeping him soft in the background. It reiterates the feel of his loneliness, of not being the focus in anyone's life at that given moment. Whether he was asked to sit that way or it was a candid shot, his body language is perfect.

This is a good interpretation of the theme but perhaps just a little too dark on your subject. I think that seeing the folds of the coat (and maybe the tatters if they are there) would create even more empathy for this pour soul. Your title evokes quite a bit of emotion.

I like the sad expressions on these little faces, but I would have liked to see something done to the photo to capture the mood. Off-centering the girls or perhaps using black and white, with your lighthing focused more on their faces than their pants would have added a more artistic touch.

You really have to study this photo to see your focal point but once you do, it is quite an interesting perspective on the challenge.

The building is just too dark to be your focal point. It gets lost in the shadows, which may or may not be your intention, but in this case I think it would be better if we could see more of the character of the building.

Although I understand what you are going for in this photo, it doesn't give me the feeling of desolution. It is a nice photo though with sharp colors and interesting shadows.

As this photo was loading and all I could see was the top two panels, I thought it was a broken window. But then, as the rest of the picture was revealed and I realized it was a spider web, your title really had meaning. I love everything about this picture, from the great lighting on the window panes and web to the blur of the background to the framing to the lack of color. Extraordinary shot. Good luck with the challenge. This looks like a ribbon-winner to me!

This is very cute. Very original and funny theme. Apparently she was moving her hands when you took the picture and the slight blur is a little distracting, but the colors are good. I do wish she didn't look quite so frightened. Doing the same thing but getting her to put a hand on her cheek and just look bored might be a little less disconcerting, considering you are using a child in the shot. You dont' want to get the idea that the child is distraught in any way.
