Euro 2004: Spain goes down

Just my opinion, but I rarely (if ever?) see recent sporting events covered by "illustrative"-type photographs. They are always action shots from the game that include the players.

Charity Horse Show Names Grand Champion

Comment:
If it weren't for the the truck and horse trailer, this would have a lot of potential. But given it is supposed to be in a newspaper, I find it a bit distracting. =]

Nice action shot. Excellent use of DOF to try and reduce distracting background. A vertical crop around just the two boys would probably work much better.

Except press photographer's usually have special passes that get them in front of the front row or even on stage so they can get pictures of the band instead of the crowd...

CONSTRUCTION TIME AGAIN -- "ORANGE BARRELS" INVADE DOWNTOWN LANSING

Comment:
Aren't orange barrels Michigan's state flower? =] Good illustratation-type image for a construction-themed article. Suggested improvement: wait for the traffic signal to turn red to imply "stop" instead of "go".

Outstanding capture. Definitely can imagine this in the sports section! Suggested improvements: a little fill flash to get some light into the shadows on her face. Ditch the border that crops the image, at least for this challenge.

I think the photo editor for this story would have preferred to see the actual olympic flame rather than a camera.

BORDER DELAYS COSTLY FOR TRUCKERS
by Rando D300

Comment:
I think for this headline, a shot parallel with the road (instead of perpendicular), looking down this seemingly endless line of trucks would have had a bit more impact. The scenery is much better from this angle of course, but editors are more picky about that kind of stuff. =]

Nice job obliterating the background. Especially for this particular challenge, the unusual (for flower shots) B&W treatment works well.

admart01 06/06/2004 09:32:41 AM
wonderful composition and b&w adds some drama, water drops are a nice touch, one of my top picks this time around

melismatica 06/04/2004 12:10:25 AM
This is a nice macro and an interesting choice to use black and white. The background in the lower left corner shows some wierdness on my monitor. I don't really know what to call it; I'm seeing what looks like folds in black velvet. I wasn't totally sure of this central placement and square cropping for the subject.

scalvert 06/02/2004 10:43:36 PM
Nice shot, but I want to see the color! Lilies and iris tend to be brightly colored, so this is a bit like seeing a B&W photo of a rainbow to me.

daisy77 06/01/2004 04:30:32 PM
nice shot, well executed. a bit harshly lit for my taste but excellent technique nonetheless.

top 10 for sure
contrast is superb
well done.

B&W You've really pulled this off! Congrast.....not only are the tones nice, but the composition is super. Love this ....

richterrell 05/31/2004 11:10:51 AM
Nice monochrome. Very sharp and contrasty.

MrAkamai 05/31/2004 12:47:23 AM
Good b/w photo for this challenge. Even though I see six petals, they are two different kinds so, technically, two groups of three. Sharp details of the petals and of the water drops. The background has a bit of noise and should have been cloned out. The stalk is fine but there are small white spots around.
