Greetings: Critique by Silver Fox
Interesting composition; gorgeous scenery taken during the daylight hours with the bright sun shining off the Gorge walls doesn\'t allow you much room to manipulate your settings with all that brightness.
I like the way you\'ve tried to frame the photograph with the tree below you and the branch above you, a very good idea, using nature this way.
Very interesting having all that snow on the other side of the Gorge and the Sun shining on the opposite side. Overall, the contrast and depth of field are great, and your focusing is right on. . .
This is a nice looking bridge with a great looking landscape, but I think you\'ve taken a larger shot than needed, getting the bridge lost with it\'s surroundings. I wonder perhaps if you should have zoomed in and presented the bridge a little more on it\'s own, and perhaps cut out the trees. It\'s really hard to say, because I wasn\'t there taking this photograph, you were.
One thing that I\'ve learned in taking photographs of people and landscapes is to keep it simple, no distractions in the background or foreground and keep your camera focused on that which caught your eye to start with. Good luck on your next Challenge.
Regards,
Ed

I think it fits the Challenge nicely.
I had a hard time counting the rings originally, and still again this second time, whether it's all that oil from the chain saw or the lighting that was used.
It's a very unusual cut of wood, different shape towards the right hand side as you look at it.
I like the various colours of the wood that you were able to capture, and it is slightly out of focus, once again perhaps due to the excess oil/wet darkness not allowing a good sharpness to the centre or the fuzzy bark and end cuts.
I think you were also a bit quick with your cropping the way you cut off the bottom of the log so sharply.

Composition is quite good, and your photograph certainly met the Challenge.
The visual impact is pleasant to the eyes leading us from the front beams up the logs and along the top of the trestle to the curve at the other end.
Your focus is good and sharp leading almost to the end of the trestle.
The Colour captured of the foliage both in front of the trestle and towards the back with the fog coming down from the mountain is really rich. The colour also captures the age and discolouration of the various timbers used on this trestle.
Very well done! Would have been interesting to see a Train coming around the bend! Keep Shooting. . .looking foward to seeing more of your work in the future.

Certainly meets the Bridges Challenge
Your photography shows great depth and detail. What I particularly like is your decision to move slightly to the left of center to take the shot. The right hand wall of the bridge as a result, serves as an excellent component on which to hang the whole composition; so many people would have taken their shot from the "centre".
This also serves as your purpose in using the rule of 3rds to control your photograph.
Now that's also what i call a long Depth Of Field, showing good details a nice prespective, and excellent lighting.
Great idea for the exposure to accomplish the silhouetting of yourself and as you stated, to still leave the details visible for us to see. Excellent idea!
I'm a lover of wooden and covered bridges (don't get to seem them that often) and I love to look at photo's showing the detail in the wooden planks on the floors, walls, and ceilings, and your photograph does just that to a large degree. It shows the strength of this bridge and the wonder of the time and detail that went into building such a structure that still stands to this day.
Colours are excellent, most of them are quite neutral and are coming from the wood, almost like a sepia toning of old. The wood is weathered and old and the colours are natural, what more could you ask for.
Focus is great, from front to rear. Couldn't be any sharper, I believe.
Visual impact is pleasant to the viewers eyes.
My only problem: It looks like they repaired the bridge with a piece of plywood at the bottom left of the bridge and the lighting at that end really catches it and lights it up. Could you have cropped it out, or moved your camera forward a foot or so to cut it out without spoiling your mood?
Excellent photography! |

Looks fine, I like the way you've created the shadows of the cork and the Corkscrew. and the color for the photograph seems just right.
