| 01/27/2006 04:15:15 PM | He Singled Himself Outby seebrownComment: ::: Greetings from Critique Club :::
Hi, as requested, here is an indepth critique of your submission.
First Impression - the most important one:
He Singled Himself Out - LOL, he sure did. That was my first thought when I saw this. Definitely a fun shot and I love the wide angle lens use.
Composition:
Could be stronger. Dead-center isn't exactly a power spot for the subject. But, with a wide-angle lens, you risk distortion with the rule of thirds.
Subject:
Mostly clear, but he is a bit underexposed - well, lighting wise ;-). My first instinct is to fell you to use fill-flash, but I'm not sure how well that works with such a wide-angle lens.
Technical (Colour, focus, and light):
Colour - Good Saturation, nice colour.
Focus - pretty sharp.
Light - You need some sort of fill on the subject.
To grow its vote?:
First, voters were looking for bigger crowds with more candid shots. Not that I'm saying you did not meet the challenge, but that's my impression of what they voted higher on. The one lighting technical probably could have gotten you a few more points also.
Summary:
Very fun shot. I love it, but with a little work it could have been very dramatic. Just for fun, you might want to try a bit of dodging on the subject to brighten him up a bit and see what you get.
Hope to see more from you soon,

Hi, as requested, here is an indepth critique of your submission.
First Impression - the most important one:
WOW, at first glimps I thought she was looking at a painting. Then I realized that the painting included the subject with a fish about to bite here ear. LOL. I must admit, you made me have to stop and look again. A doubletake is a good thing.
Composition:
VERY strong, good use of Rule of Thirds!
Subject:
Strong, well defined, good use of Post-Process blur to achieve the DoF you wanted.
Technical (Colour, focus, and light):
Focus: very sharp
Colour: Maybe the flesh tones are a tad on the blue side, but it helps the "aquarium" feel.
Light: Love how it highlights her face.
To grow its vote?:
I honestly can't see a way to improve this photo. It made it to 17th place which is a good accomplishment. It's got everything a photo needs to ribbon. Interest, creativity, all technicals. Perhaps, bribing voters will help... LOL.
Summary:
I love it. One of the most creative shots in the challenge, definitely keep up this kind of work! That ribbon is on it's way!
Hope to see more from you soon,

Hi, as requested, here is an indepth critique of your submission.
First Impression - the most important one:
It says a lot about this photo that I remember it vividly from the challenge. It took the spirit of the challenge and produced a memorable image.
Composition:
Composition is interesting and quite strong. Perhaps the subject should have dominated the composition a bit more.
Subject:
Clear, well defined and quite interesting ;-)
Technical (Colour, focus, and light):
Focus looks a bit soft to me, but I think this is from the noise in the image rather than missed focus.
Colour : Good B&W treatment, but I'd like to see the contrast bumped up just a bit.
Light: Light is good, exposure is good.
To grow its vote?:
Tough challenge, but I think the noise hurt you a bit.
Summary:
A well executed take on this challenge. As I said in my opening statement, you've created a memorable image.
Hope to see more from you soon,
