SPIKE: Strong & Stableby 777STANComment: *Critique Club*
The concept is wonderful - as a previous comment stated, it was refreshing to see this interesting take on the challenge! Your post processing definitely seems to be effective - good contrast and sharpening. I particularly like the composition and depth of focus here. I also like how, while the spike and the background are pretty much the same color, they do stand out from one another.
The thing that, in my opinion, hurt the shot the most is the harsh shadow. It just attracts the eye a bit too much, so shooting at a different time of day or adding more lighting may have helped. Another thing that may have looked nicer is if the white spots (kind of in a parallel line to the black line) were removed either before the shot or in post processing. However, that is very nitpicky and I definitely didn't notice any problems with that at first glance. |

Gratuitous Kid Shotby timfythetooComment: *Critique Club*
As I commented before, I really love this concept! I kind of agree with the previous comment that the blue and red colors sort of clash with the fall colors on the trees. But then it would be a totally different shot and I think while being technically a little better, it just wouldn't have the same impact.
Here are some things I don't like: The whiteness of the sky (but I know that's hard to avoid sometimes!) and the border (I feel it's just too overpowering).
Other things I do like, though: The colors are amazingly beautiful. I love the pose with head down.. it makes it seem contemplative and interesting. I love the double sets of tracks and how you did not center them; the perspective with the lines into the distance towards the clearing in the trees is very awesome as well.
Just because this is a shot with a kid doesn't mean it's not also good photography. Like a previous comment talked about, your title probably didn't help things. This is a good shot and I wish it had done better. |

Alone with Me...by ApeeComment: *Critique Club*
Well, it didn't place high but I think you got a decent score! This is a very interesting poto and I'm happy to be able to critique it.
I think the main problem that you have is that the image is too busy. I love the lights, the buildings, the two figures, the whispy lines in the upper left.. I love every aspect of this image but I think when putting it all together it maybe leaves the viewer a bit visually confused or overwhelmed. Aside from being too busy, the composition is good, and I like the contrast between light and dark that is going on here.
I feel that the tracks are just fine in the prominance that they are... yes, the challenge is trains and railroads but the description says photograph anything to do with them, and your shot does that well.
Overall this is a great shot and I am glad that you decided to enter! |
