Too rich in colour to be desolate. Come to Brooklyn and I will show you some canals which are so poluted they catch fire. Maybe you will change your mind about the definition of desolation then?

Indeed, this has the potential to meet the challenge as implied with your title. But, as it stands, it does not. If only you had processed the image to remove some of the rich hues and textures. Isolate some of the elements and create a city of desolate inhabitants (as NYC can be for some).
