Very nice capture. I'll bet it's tough to get one isolated from the brushy desert vegetation. This looks a lot like our (Eastern US) hairy woodpecker.

Here's our latest woodpecker visitor.

This is an alternate rendition of the challenge photograph. I have tried to improve the image by taking into consideration comments during voting.

The day was overcast which expressed itself in the color of the water...a warm, dark grey. Several commenters during voting commented that the water was too saturated or desaturated. Since it couldn't be both, I took this to mean that the picture should have more color or a wider range of colors. Others thought the image too dark.

In the version that appeared in the challenge, my intent was to emphasize the relatively quite small subject, which I did largely by increasing contrast using levels and curves in Photoshop.
